Hey scratchman. I am in Bendigo. I see your over St Arnaud way. Sometimes the Bendigo tip/recycling shop at Eaglehawk has a decent road bike but they usually disappear quickly. If your over this way it might be worth a visit.

I would suspect that they are 27 inch wheels.

Hello Malvern Star officionados, can anyone date approximately an Esquire gents bike, 6 sp, originally with a positron shift system?
I want to ride in L'Eroica at Beechworth in April and the cut off is supposed to be 1980s or earlier.
Found a Malvern Star 2 star in the shearing shed. Serial number is 4P326. I am from WA and assume the P means made in Perth. The sturmey archer hub has 53 on it. I'm assuming the frame was made around 1953. Can anyone shed any light on this?
positron started in 1975 and retired around 1982, so you can check the two-letter 'shimano date code' on the web and determine if your positron is definitely pre-'80.
usually, original shimano parts are the same age as the bike, +/- 1 year.
Serial number would indicate Perth 1944, with the likely addition of the SA hub at a later date. Pics?

Any chance of some more history on it? Was it built in Melbourne, What club your Dad rode for, etc.

Hi guys, thanks for this thread! I took my fathers Double XX into a bike store to get some advice on restoration and they said it wasn't worth restoring. Apparently it needs a new chain/cassette/chain rings, bearings, front axle, brake levers, pads and cable set and seat. I do want to give it a shot because my Dad is not well but this is new to me and don't know where to begin to source appropriate parts or second hand alternatives. Major learning curve.. Any advice heaps appreciated!
