Clubs in/near the Dandenongs
Postby djw47 » Thu Mar 21, 2013 12:02 pm
Hi, I live in the Dandenongs and enjoy getting out and about on my roadie as much as possible. I was wondering if there were any clubs that operated in the area that I could join? There's plenty in the suburbs which seem to ride out in the 'nongs but there seems little point joining one of them as I'd need to travel to where they meet then back again. Any suggestions?

There's no bike shops in the hills that I know of, but you could try some of the LBS in the surrounding 'flatlands' for Club advice - The Basin, Mooroolbark, Croydon Cycleworks, Lilydale, FTG / Upper FTG
Dirt Rider is a MTB club out that way. They might run road rides. Knox bicycle touring club. Local BUG's. Check Bicycle Network Victoria club (and shop) listings
The Dandenongs is more of a destination than a location for a bike club. I'm sure there are a lot of cyclists residing in the hills though

I ride Sundays with the Middle Distance club (MDBC), starting from Croydon. I ride down the hill to the start, peel off early if the ride goes up into the dandenongs, or do the extra kms if we head out warrandyte, healesville way.
4 groups, each based on a different avg speed.

Racing/training? Touring? MTB? Triathlon? Shop bunches? Audax?
There are no clubs actually based in the Dandenongs, but a fair selection of different types that ride there at various times. I used to live in the Dandies long ago - I got used to jumping the bike onto the train to go elsewhere for my club rides - the Dandies was my commute, and rides that I led for the club.
Mate of mine, Dave H rides lots with Audax and lives in Ferny Creek. But he goes elsewhere for most of his riding.

Hells 500 boys hang out that way. A great group to get the lungs burning with.

Although they're not located in the dandenongs, Blackburn Cycling Club host a time trial up the 1:20 annually...

Sorry, as kukamunga pointed out, I do have other things to do other than hang about in here. Thanks for the responses, I wanted something that was based in the Dandenongs ideally to avoid having the cycle over the mountains to reach a club than might then cycle the same route anyway. I'm on a road bike, (as it says in the first line of my OP), maybe I need to start up a group myself...

Let us know your progress in that regard, then . As my forum sig indicates, I live fairly close to the Dandenongs, and rode up there about 40 times last year. It typically takes me about half an hour to get to The Basin. Where in the Dandenongs do you live .
