Spotted a trike - Kwinana freeway, Perth.

Postby DaveW » Tue Jul 01, 2008 11:08 pm

Today (Tuesday) about 3.30 I passed a trike heading north just north of Canning bridge - he was heading north I was heading south.

I waved, and he returned it - anyone here?

Yellow trike - not sure what make etc - not up to speed on all that.

Sounds like Exadios. What colour beard was he wearing? ;)

Cheers,
Graeme

I had a head wind and was puffing pretty hard - couldn't see very straight by then

But I don't think he had one - maybe a neat cropped beard - but a... um... er... more experienced gentleman as evidenced by his distinguished silvering hair.

No beard!? I think you must have been mistaken: it couldn't have been a recumbent then .... :D

I was pufed out by that stage so it is very possible that I am mistaken - of course it may have fallen out of the box during delivery....

I did see another guy on a yellow trike on the thomas road freeway crossover and I couldn't tell if he had a beard - the balaclava hid it!
That was some time late last week, when I left work late - probably around 5-ish that night.

It was not me. I have not been on the Freeway path north of Canning Bridge for a month now.

There is a guy, who lives in Bullsbrook (I think), who has a yellow TerraTrike. He rides up to Perth along the Freeway path. He does not have a beard.

(An aside: If a beardless person rides a recumbent is he or she a recumbent rider? I do not know the answer to this question. Are there any professional philosophers on this bulletin board?)

If they don't have a beard, then they're either just borrowing it, or are trying to make the universe implode upon itself.

Only two options remain to solve this problem - they either need to give the 'bent back, or grow a beard.

Any other action would result in pure destruction of the known universe.

I shaved my beard off recently and lasted for a week, I felt like an imposter without it (insert smily bearded emoticon).

What? A beard?

Postby Freddyflatfoot » Wed Jul 02, 2008 9:13 pm

I actually know several 'bent riders who don't have beards!
I do have a small goatee, does that count? :D
Maybe the beard thing is peculiar to WA?
Cheers!

We have a couple of riders in our group who don't have beards (one is female, so she is excused). But the stereotype is well entrenched .... :)

Well, I don't know. This is a serious question and, I think, it deserves a more rigorous treatment than your assertion that beardless people riding recumbents are recumbent riders.

My understanding is that a goatee makes you a provisional recumbent rider. :)

WRT the female rider it is my understanding that she has been given an honorary beard.

I have tried to grow a beard on a few occasions but never quite managed it sucessfully.

I also have not yet managed to get myself onto a bent bike.

I am beginning to think that these two things are related somehow.

So do I have to sucessfully grow a beard and then I will be able to get a recumbent, or do I get the recumbent and then the beard will grow? :?

Ahhhh, excellent question David san. Whilst I am far from an expert in the field (still on my 'P' plates if the Exadios principle applies) I began riding bents before attempting the beard but something wasn't quite right. Perhaps there is a cosmic connection between facial hair and riding bents OR is it the case that as bent riders we happy to be non conformist?

cheers from the twilight zone

'Bent riders tend to be practical people, riding bikes which have as much function as form. There is no practical reason to shave (it's a fashion thing), and 'bent riders are less into fashion than function.

Of course, it could be a defensive thing too - "I'll just hide behind this here hairy face .... " :D

Graeme

Unshaved on rest days

Postby Freddyflatfoot » Thu Jul 03, 2008 6:11 pm

Ok, I don't shave on my rest days, and when I'm on hols (like ATM!), so does that count?
Oh, I do shave once a week before I go to church on Sundays!
Cheers!

OK - Monday I saw a bent cycle - fairly low and I think black frame - but I was going faster than I'm used to so I didn't get a good look (love the new bike  )

He did have a short, neat cropped grey beard though.

I was heading south, he was going north alnog Kwinana freeway - I can't rememebr exactly where now (it was two days ago  ) but it was along the Melville Waters foreshore.

I've seen that guy riding around, but I don't know him. He can often be seen riding with some fast roadies on the weekend.

The guy who was the subject of the original post does ride with us. His name is Peter and he confirmed he was in the area on the day you mentioned. And no, he doesn't have a beard (I won't speculate any further on his credentials to ride recumbent. ;))

Cheers,
Graeme

Thanks for the info.

I always keep an eye out for the bents - but that is not hard of course.
