Easter Monday HPV runs at the Ford Youyangs Proving Grounds

Postby Riggsbie » Tue Apr 09, 2013 10:55 pm

Hi everyone,

Last October Tim Corbett had the opportunity to run his HPV - Phantom - at the Ford Proving Grounds at the Youyangs. Last time out he succeeded in breaking the 6 hour Australian endurance record.

We ran another attempt for some World Records on Easter Monday.....

Here are the results:

Submitted

• Tim Marquardt 61.29km 12.75 laps – Personal Best, narrowly missing the Australian 1 hr Record by 0.5km.

• Ben Goodall 65.47 km 13.75 laps – Australia 1 hr Record (taken from Jeff Nielsen at 61.8km)

• Gareth Hanks 71.45km 14.9 laps – World 1hr Multitrack Record & Australian 1hr Record (taken from Ben Goodall less than an hour earlier)

• Bryce Marquardt 55.01km 11.75 laps – World Junior 1hr Record & Australian Junior 1 hr Record.

Report from the day's events:

Ford Australia, Team Phantom & Trisled deliver World Record Success in Human Powered Vehicles at Ford’s Proving Ground, 1st April 2013.

Two local HPV Teams were invited to use Ford Australia’s Test Track at the You Yangs, Lara, Victoria, to break several Australian and World Records for Human Powered endurance. Geelong based elite cyclist, Tim Corbett (Team Phantom TT & Carbon Revolution, Trike 6 hr Australian Record Holder) was targeting the trike 6 hr world record. Members of the Trisled Team from Dromana were targeting several 1 hr records in different categories on two wheels and three wheels.

Often with such outdoor human endurance activities, weather and the environment play a significant role in success or failure. The test track was clean, the temperature was ideal, sunload was low due to the cloud cover, the windspeed was borderline acceptable and the riders were both mentally and physically fit.

Following much development in Ford’s engineering test facilities, Tim Corbett’s Phantom TT Trike design was optimized. Learning from Tim’s Australian 6 hr record success in October 2012, a number of significant design changes had been made to balance aerodynamic performance and interior airflow and temperature, notably the application of a solar reflective paint finish supplied by Solacoat (Ocean Grove).

The conditions were almost perfect. Tim set off for his 6 hr World Record attempt at 9.30am requiring an average of 57 kph or a total of 69 laps of the 4.8km Ford Test Track in 6 hrs. Tim was hitting his 1, 2 and 3 hour targets of 59kph for the first three hours. However, the windspeed was increasing beyond the acceptable maximum of 10kph. By 1pm the windspeed was touching 20kph and gusting as the machine exited the bends back onto the exposed straights making it extremely hard work pushing through and managing side gusts. After 3 more laps, Tim abandoned his attempt as the lap times dropped below target in the constant fight with the wind. Tim completed 210km with a final average of 56kph.

The entire team wondered if there was any chance of realistically attempting any records. If the weather was following a similar pattern as the previous day, then there was a chance that the windspeed would drop towards late afternoon. The track’s windsock provided a constant gauge on the behavior of the wind for the next few hours while the team pondered and hoped for an opportunity. A few practice runs confirmed that the wind was relenting. With the concern for remaining daylight, at 4pm the team decided this was the best chance anybody was going to have to secure any records.

Gareth Hanks in his World Record breaking Trike called “Completely Overzealous” started his 1 hr World Record attempt a minute ahead of Tim Marquardt, riding a two wheel recumbent with periscopic view finder. Gareth was clocking consistent 69kph for 4 laps until he suffered a puncture to his front left tyre while changing lanes across the joining strips in the track. Tim Marquardt kept going while Gareth and his support team fixed the puncture and considered the opportunity to run again having already spent up to 25% of his energy.

With “Completely Overzealous” in the pits, Ben Goodall (Trisled Director) took the opportunity to start his Australian record attempt in his two wheeled Nitro machine.
While Marquardt’s intention was to simply set a personal best time. After 12.75 laps Tim achieved his PB of 61.3km and narrowly missed beating the existing record by half a kilometer.

Conditions grew more favourable as the windspeed dropped to below 10kph, the clouds thinned and the sun began to set.

It became apparent that Ben was ahead of the Australian 1 hr Record of 61.8km set by Jeff Nielsen in 2008. Pedalling his compact two wheeled “Nitro” machine, Ben pushed through 13.75 laps to claim the Australian 1 hr Record with 65.47 km.

Meanwhile, Gareth was re-energising himself to restart his World Record attempt in “Completely Overzealous” and Tim Marquardt’s son, Bryce, started his attempt at the Junior 1hr Australian and 1hr World Record.

Gareth was literally flying, again regularly clocking an average 71kph on successive laps while contending with the breeze and occasionally reaching 83kph. Under a red sunset, both Bryce and Gareth earned themselves World & Australian 1hr Records. Bryce covered 55.01km and Gareth completing 14.9 laps and 71.45km to claim the Multitrack (trike) World Record.

I'll post some links from my Photobucket account as I was the "official photographer" for the day.

Nothing but wow really. Makes a mockery of my average commuting speed!

I would love to check them out. I'd love to have a long conversation with Ben Goodall about velomobile design too.

Wow. Thats all unbelievable. Unreal speeds.
There didn't seem to be much room in there for Gareth though.
It looks to have been a great day. Was there any video/

I have a few GoPro video clips but we do not have the NBN and it is woefully slow to upload any HD video.....

I'll look at cutting it down to some little snippets.....
