With the Gatorskins you want the Hardshell version, they are good.

I run them on our tandem and wear them down to the threads no problem.

Pro-lite need to start making tyres I think.

Vittoria manufacture for others. Perhaps that's where they are coming from

All good guesses, the tyre industry just like the bicycle industry is not as big as most people would think.

It seems odd that they would discontinue a product that has such strong sales

I'm curious as to why it's suspected they have been discontinued. Gatorskin tyres still feature on Continental's website and are in stock at Wiggle, CRC and Evans at the moment.........

If it means I no longer need to worry about shattered glass, then I'll buy them. Through a few notorious areas of one PSP with a lot of glass, I get off the bike and carry it. Cautious, but better than getting wrecked tyres.

On the other hand, another +1 for GP4000s. Awesome tyres.

So thanks to this thread I know what not to buy.

I have just destroyed my continental ultra that came with my bike. Hit a very large pothole at a fast speed resulting in a 60kph battle of wills with gravity to remain upright. The tyre has several slashes in it a couple of 2 mm gapes and the side wall has a 1mm hole in it, that the innertube is now trying to escape from. Covered only 550 k's
The local guys I ride with are going to place bulk wiggle order and share out the goodies, IE bulk innertube purchase. But I will buy locally if sensibly priced.
Rim is slightly bent in, but not bad.
Roads around here are bloody awful, rural, broken Tarmac and loose surface is more common than glass.
Schwalbe Durano Plus Performance Folding Road Tyre seem to fit the bill. Should I go to 25's? (will they fit) Will this be noticeable in performance loss? EG extra resistance..

Thanks for reading.
p.s. I ride a standard Scott Foil 40 and weigh 100kg.

If you can't measure 27mm at the rear stays and front fork, I wouldn't bother trying.

The Durano 25s should roll better than Durano Plus 23s.

Having only read the first and last page, and with little inclination to read the 20 pages in-between, can people tell me how the following tyres are rated; GP Continental 4000 and Specialized Armadillo.

pretty funny stuff - I'm extremely surprised they kept riding after the fine thread started appearing on the tyre.

Been riding on the Specialized Armadillo Elite All Condition tires and have found them to be excellent. Only done 1500-2000km in them but they have been flawless since I got rid of the gatorskins and put these on. Excellent tire for me.

I've had Gators clock up over 20,000km in all-weather commuting, and on my other roadie. Can't remember the last time I had a flat. :)
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

The taterskin is one of the few tyres ever made that probably worked better inside out.

Maybe that was the cause of all my grief in the first place - should have put the tread on the inside!
