Cyclops Monaco

Postby Killswitch » Thu Apr 18, 2013 2:39 pm

Hi guys,

I just came across a Cyclops Monaco. Before I pull it down I just wanted to know some more details about it. Does anyone know if it was a decent bike in the 80s and the exact year this one is?

The plan is to build a single speed for the mrs. If its actually decent, which i doubt, I will restore it for her.

It is exactly like this.

Cheers.

I think your assessment is accurate.

... That said, it's still good candidate for a cheap carte-blanche project for the missus. Def. no risk upsetting any retro-purists.

I may be wrong, but I seem to recall "Cyclops" being sold as a brand in Coles, many many moons ago. At least this may have been true in smaller town stores like where I was a kid. Coles might have partially filled the Department Store niche as well as the Supermarket in such places. It might not have been true in metro stores.

Similarly, I think "Road King" were the Big Dub brand.

i remember going to wooies at canley vale or parra, and having a pie and a strawberry milkshake at the cafeteria.
a few years later, going to Holly's at k-mart too.
crinkle cut chips and chocolate milk while mum looked at frocks and bought dad's socks.
good old variety stores.

And whilst we're flogging another nostalgia horse... check out this I found in the bottom of my wardrobe recently. It contained my Cub & Scout hats and scarf. Last used in 1988 or so.

I swear, these things have a half life longer than some radioactive waste.

Cyclops are still sold in K-Mart, and they're still junk :) . At one time WAY way back they made some decent quality stuff, a work colleague used to work at the Cyclops factory down south.

99% of the ladies bikes of that era were the same level hi tensile frame, a few of the better brands like centurion & myata had cromo, so not a bad prospect for a fix up..
I have a new set of coaster brake single speed wheels and new cranks to suit a single if your interested....

Just realized your in Perth..

Yeah could be. Can you PM me details and price?

Does anyone know the year this was sold? It would be great to let the mrs know. Planning to build it as a surprise for her.

if it's a shimano rear derailleur, look for a two-letter date code on it, and google 'shimano date codes'. something on it will have a date code.
