Hi, im wanting to upgrade my wheels. I currently have Swiss DT R1900 wheels. Im tossing up between a few options. Im tossing up wether to go down the factory wheels or build my own pair. I am 175cm tall and weight 83kgs. I ride to work and go for two long rides a week. I may like to do races down the track so i would like fast wheels.
The factory wheels im looking at are:
Shinamo ms80 $499 Heard great things about these wheels!
Fulcrum Racing 1 $709 abit more expensive then i like, but if there is a major difference i can be persuaded
Mavic Ksyrium Equipe S $310 great buy for the price!
Fulcrum Racing 3 2-Way Fit $557
Mavic Cosmic Elite Clincher $382
I was also looking at building wheels and looking at using Shimano Ultegra Hubs and Mavic CXP 33 Road Rim 2013 build will probably cost around $500.
Now question is what would be the best option? its so hard to filter through the reviews on the net and get a clear picture. Would building wheels give me advantage over the factory wheels? like the shimano ms80? or am i best to stick with the factory wheels? Also are these wheels much of upgrade over my current swiss DT R1900. any advice would be great thanks!

Hi Brucey, personally I find building all parts of my family's bikes very satisfying so i like to build or disassemble/rebuild my own wheels to keep them tippy top, but the reality is that buying complete "factory" wheels is very economical because firstly, you will never be able to buy the components (hubs/spokes/rims) for what the factories pay for them and the labour costs for the factories to build them are extremely low. The long and the short of it is unless you're after something really special it will be more economical to buy a set of pre-built wheels and then go over them yourself to make sure they are perfect.

these. yes they're mine, and this is kind of a sales pitch, but check the forums for talk about the builder (Greg Ryan) and I'll let his reputation do the rest. Amazing wheels. Were custom made for me by Greg and have been flawless (apart from my stupidity). They are ultra fast. My (ex)triathlete mate use to borrow my wheels (he had 50/80mm deep pro design wheels) for his competitions!! and the freewheel sounds sooo nice.

The list you've posted ranges from fast race wheels to training wheels at the complete opposite end of the performance spectrum.
If your objective is a fast set of wheels while still maintaining a reasonable level of reliability then you might like to consider the Pro-Lite Merano and Bracciano. Stock levels are low at the moment but I have a massive shipment due here in 2-weeks. If you want something we are out of stock on just call and we can back-order the stock for immediate shipent when it arrives.

Pro-Lite Bracciano

The prices should be well within your budget. If you have any questions please feel free to ask here, PM or phone me.
