What is my old MTB worth?

Postby Biffidus » Mon Apr 22, 2013 9:18 am

I've just replaced my old MTB and a relative was interested in buying it but I have no idea how much it is worth, if anything. It was purchased in 1997 and had a RRP of $1200. It has been ridden regularly since then with no major problems, just replacing parts as they wear out. Can anyone give me an idea what a reasonable price for this bike would be?
  • 1997 Shimano SlickRock STX MTB, aluminium frame, RST suspension forks (no lockout), Shimano STX-RC components (DEORE precursor), V-brakes, 24 speed.
  • Bottom bracket, cranks, chainrings, cassette and chain replaced in 2009 with DEORE components.
  • Gear select (quick shifters) replaced with Alivio units in 2012.
  • Vittoria Randonneur 26x1.5" fitted in 2012
  • planetbike mudguards & stand included.

If it's a relative, that's family, just give it to them I reckon.
I'm no expert but I wouldn't pay more than $150-200 which is about half the weekly grocery bill  :x

2009 deore crankset, cassette and chain have a new replacement value of ~$150 today, and would risk being worn after 4 years.

Note that in the same timeframe I've fitted a new deore crankset, worn a deore middle ring out, replaced it with an SLX one (best part of the SLX group is that middle ring), and fitted, worn out and replaced a cassette and 3 chains.

Rest of the bike is life expired ie no real value. (second hand rim braked rims are not valuable items).

Would be a freebie to a relative if I owned it, after giving it a thorough lookover for fatigue at the welds, and I'd tell them to bring it back to me in a couple of thousand kms for a replacement chain or if it started shifting badly.

A case of beer.

Good beer though.

I bought from a neighbour a similar vintage Trek mtb that required pedals and a bit of straightening work on the derailleur and hanger for about $10. It was more cosmetically challenged than the above example, which was what attracted me to it - no one's gonna steal that.

So as long as it's in good mechanical condition, a case of beer or similar value would be about right.

I'd be more inclined to donate it to a bike kitchen or some such.

Plenty of less fortunate people out there whose lives could benefit from such a beastie!

So... somewhere in the slab-of-beer to $200 range. I can live with that.

Thanks :)

Freebie to a slab. Anything more than that and you start to look like Ebenezer Scrooge.

My rule of thumb is any fully working bike in reasonable condition and from a low-mid range of a reputable brand and over 10 years old should be $100-$150. Higher end or rare stuff depends on the collectors market.

$150. But it is all about need and how well it is running currently.

I just have poured $250 into a bike of similar Vintage (slightly better quality with Rockshocks) :? . But it is my darling do it all commuter. $200 for full deore drive chain and derailluer upgrade. $50 for a new tyre and tube when I got a flat on the old crappy one.

It's running really well actually - up until last year I was commuting on it regularly and replacing parts with equivalent or better quality components as necessary. I was very tempted to hold on to it as a backup for when my all the high-tech bits break on my new commuter break and it has to go back in for servicing.
