Can someone date my Bianchi Frame?

Postby Killswitch » Mon Apr 22, 2013 11:54 pm

Hi guys,

I am trying to work out the age of my Bianchi Frame. It was the Bianchi Colour but was in a pretty bad shape rust wise. I'm about to paint it and turn it into a single speed but want to know more about it before I do.

The Serial number is 8F15236.

Can someone help or point me on the right direction. :)

Can someone date my Bianchi Frame?

For the love of god do not cut anything off it. There are thousands of low end clunker frames you can use for that purpose - this is not one of them.

Since its already partially stripped, it deserves a proper strip and respray, I say.

Over bracket cable routing says late 70s/early 80s (at latest) to me, but there's plenty of people here who can more accurately date it. I'm going with June 1978 based on the 8F, though.

Totally agree with Dan - do not cut anything off this frame. And paint, not powder please. Me two bits worth ...

Did you pick it up with any original parts?

Whilst you've got it stripped of parts it would be also interesting to weigh the bare frame and fork seperately.

That and if you have the original (or supplied) seat post it came with its diameter should give you a fair indicator of quality, i.e. where it might have sat in the product range.

+1 to previous comments about not modding the frame. By all means ride it as a SS for a while, but at first looks it would seem a decent quality steel frame, worth preserving.

You may have some (slightly) whacky Italian threadings to deal with also. Tread carefully there in not stripping any threads or such.

It is only what you see. Had no components, or seat post sorry. I will try and weigh it and let you all know.

It's 3.6 kg with the fork.

So if I paint it metallic blue, Bianchi lovers everywhere won't try and push me off it? Or should I try to restore original Colour with stickers etc?

Hours on google and still nothing. Does anyone know somewhere to look for serial number details?

Try emailing Bianchi in Italy,
As far as age im guessing late 60's early 70's.
What size is it?
I would love this thing.

3.6kg with the fork would be fairly respectable I think, depending on the size of the frame. At least it's definitely not gas pipe!

Google is overated as a search engine these days. The majority is syndicated crap. It takes extra effort to get most stuff of any substance. Keep at it though and keep asking around. Sometimes links one or two removed from a search result will hit pay dirt I find. But +1 to e-mailling Bianchi with some of the details you've shown us as well.

I would assume it would be worth more in Celeste (assuming you ever wanted to sell it down the track. It's your bike though, so paint it whatever colour makes you feel good :) .

I dunno, 3.6kg puts it pretty close to the gaspipe category. Check out the frame weight thread in this forum for an idea. I've got a 63cm dawes galaxy at the moment which weighs less.

If you've got an old bianchi, IMO it needs to be celeste.

you could paint it celeste, sell it, and buy a blue frame (they did make dark blue bianchis, if you wanna go that way)?

i think if it's older, and it's celeste, i'd definitely keep it celeste. in fact if it was any other colour, i'd sell it and buy a celeste frame, so i'm prolly not the best person to listen to ;p

It does seem a little heavy. However the dropouts are forged and there is no mud guard eyelets so it must be someway up the pecking order of Bianchi's.

You have to remember that in Italy Bianchi has made gas pipe K-Mart specials all the way to the hand made "Raparto Corse" stuff.

Don't get me wrong, I have quite a soft spot for old celeste bianchi's. If somebody has a cheap frame in 58cm  I'm sure re-sprayed this will make a lovely bike. The weight however puts it in the repco superlite or even maybe traveller category, not exactly a lightweight racing beast.

seems it has changed over the years
but Pantone and CMYK codes are here
now you have to get someone who can match to that.

Or alternatively, you could take the fork with scraps of paint left on it and get it matched at an auto paint shop. Or you could try a place like autobarn where I've been able to get paint matched and mixed into a rattle can in the past.
