Well I've ridden 70km a couple of times very comfortably without stopping at all (including up Mt Buffalo and back, though you were required to dismount at the very top), so 100 shouldn't be that hard. Last year the first 50 km flew by, and I didn't feel any great need to stop - just felt I should pace myself and take the opportunity to refill with water/eat up. I don't remember noticing food on the stops though, so as long as you're carrying enough water, avoid any punctures and have decent bladder control, there's no real need to stop. For the second half I imagine my legs/butt will have something to say about taking a break at some point, but we'll see.
Hmm, avoiding brakes before the ferry would be a real challenge...you'd have to time it well with the traffic lights along Beach Rd for a start!

And nah, it's a good warm-up ride into the city - it's kinda part of the excitement as the closer you get there's more and bikes all heading the same direction.
Is there a course map anywhere? My mother has expressed an interest in doing the ATB for the sheer purpose of striking off her bucket list the riding over the West Gate Bridge (I believe she may want some photos on the top there too just to show she did it. ).
Which ride lengths ride over the West Gate? She will probably have done next to no training and isn't overly fit so the shorter the better. I'll be riding with her too although we probably won't be maintaining a decent speed unless I can teach her to draft.
If she can manage 25km on her own, she'll be able to do 50km as part of an event like ATB. I gather it's set up so you can take a substantial break at the half-way point.
There's over 25 weeks between now and the event, so if she takes the bike out of the garage and does a 1k spin around the block, then adds another km each week she'll be fine
Looking at doing the Franga return to the city. Good for us 'country folks' so am not stranded at Alexandra Gardens at the end if starting from Sorrento.
Managed Mt Martha to St Kilda and back in 3.5 hours (112km) so should manage it ok. Difference is I've found the long flats require more stamina as there isn't so much downhill where you can 'rest' unlike the hills around here. I was buggered by the time I got home on that long ride.
Otherwise I'd do the Sorrento to the city.

Just signed up for the Frankston return 100km ride. As long as its not blowing a hooley on the way back, I'll be fine.
Average speed always goes up as the ride is reasonably flat.
It will be my first so am looking forward to it.
Just gotta hit up my peeps for some sponsorship now. At least they start you off low on that side of things. $125 goal to begin with so it's very do able and I should get a fair bit more for the cause.

I think I should manage well. Earlier in the year i did the MAD ride which was 105km with a climb up mount maceoden fairly easily and didnt feel wrecked afterwards so with a bit more training I should be fine. Unfortunately fractured my kneecap so im out for a few weeks. Also kinda nervous about the ferry ride I get very seasick and dont want that to interrupt my ride

Ps I was one of the guys in a hi-vis vest directing you over the Calder on that ride. It was a warm day!
I know a lot of people do this annually, but I've gone from 50 to 100 to 210, and don't feel compelled to do the admittedly pretty extra 40 around St Leonard on what's already a long day for me! Perhaps sometime the 210 down to Sorrento and back, or one of the shorter rides with my wife.
As for the MAD ride, yes, location has something to do with how great it is. Audax have taken me on some great rides out of Daylesford and Malmsbury too and they'd be excellent for you to do solo or with friends.
I did the 210 clockwise and it was great fun. Challenging from Queenscliffe to Geelong but as someone else said the Westerlys were awesome. "Cruising" around 55kmh on the freeway coming back. Not going to do it this year though as I'm not a crowd person. But its one of those things I think you have to do like 3 peaks.
finally signed up for the 210km M-Q-S-M. I did the 250km last year and I dont think port arlington is worth another visit
doing the same as last year with the half marathon the week before so a lot of endurance cross training for me

A mate from Sydney signed up and is coming down, so looks like im in as well. Only doing the 135km this time, would love to do the 210 again but having the 135km starting 10 minutes from home is just too good to pass up. Have been slack since we had our daughter, i've got some serious work to do prior to October
