You really have to wonder why. If they offered you a better range of chain rings, you wouldn't even contemplate 11sp. You are not going to be able to go smaller only bigger on the rear.

Mmm.. maybe I should read up more about them then, if it's a more "universal" spider. Does anyone else besides Shimano sell aftermarket rings to suit?

Would you not eventually just buy a second crank anyway? It's a lot less messing around to do the swap.

Or just stick with compact?

Gee the previous Ultegra must have been a really poor groupset in order to get such improvements on the new one. Shame on you Shimano for releasing 6700 obviously a second rate effort hope the designers were sacked.

DUUUUDE UDi2 just became exciting 52/36 with 11-23 ftw I can do without the hydro brakes, SRAM. I just need a cheap 11th cog. Ultegra does that in SPADES.

Being able to swap chainrings between standard (or even TT) and compact easily is a big deal, saves a ton of money and some people like running on the flat and taking on the hills...

It is pretty average actually, as is DA 7900. DA 7800 is streets ahead of both, haven't ridden with DA 9000 to compare.

50/34 11-32 would be perfect. 34/32 for steep climbs after already riding a brazillian kms on audax rides and 50/11 so I can pretend I can actually spin out 50/12 while sprinting when having coffee after normal road rides.

Shame, errm well kind-a, that my good roadie is Campy. And, bugga, just upgraded my CX to 105.

I'm really happy with the 52/36 option. I run a compact 10/12 months per year and looking forward to having a bit more in the fast end

Now to just hope they meet their Sep release goal as i'm keen to build up a new bike with this before the end of the year.

Probably not - 11 speeds may likely dictate a thinner chain.

A lot of professionals are using 7900 SRM (10 speed) with the DA 9000 group, so yes I would say 10 speed shimano chainrings work with 11 speed. Perhaps the same could be said for whatever chainrings are on your Fulcrum crankset. The gap between the inneside of the 11 and 10 speed chain links is the same, however the outside width of the chain is thinner with 11 speed.

The biggest problem tgat people have with 7900 is that they dont know how to set it up correctly and use crap cables in internal routed frames.

9000 is better but if you dont learn how to set the front derailleur properly then will have the same problems

You could even run a 9 speed chainrings and it would work, the inside width of 9, 10 & 11 speed shimano chain links are the same.

My commuter ran 9 speed chainrings on a 10 speed drivetrain (well 10 speed chain, cassette & shifters) for a couple of years

The best thing for me to come out of the release of Ultegra is the access to much cheaper 11 speed cassettes. I do however already have 12-25 and 12-28. So it will be a matter of when they wear out ill have access to cheaper cassettes. No doubt this will be music to those SRAM users ears who go 11 speed but would prefer a 12 over their only option of an 11 on the SRAM cassettes.

Also, the four arm spider that accepts all sizes of chainrings it simply brilliant of shimano and if the FD shifting on this new Utlegra is anything like DA, I'm assuming it will be given the same design has been employed, well that is just great also.
