2013 money pits?
Postby g-boaf » Sun Apr 14, 2013 8:53 pm
This year so far for me:
Giant TCR Advanced SL3 w/ Ultegra Di2 - $4600.
Conti GP4000s and lots of tubes - $150
Topeak PrepStand Pro - $349
Repair front wheel, new gear cable and energy bars - $60.
3T Integra stem for the Trek - $300.
Running total: $5459.
Now have two bikes, one with alloy wheels and the Giant with carbon wheels. No surprise that I like the Giant a lot.

I hope I have no need to buy any more of those! I've gone through too many of them this year.ldrcycles wrote:I'll admit to buying 2 new tubes at $8 a pop the other day. Other than that I have spent no money on bikes this year, no siree, not me, nuh uh, nothing to see here, move along...
I'm now sticking with Conti GP4000s tyres and nothing else.

i got sick of buying tubes at $5+ a pop so i bought a box of 50 bulk from a wholesaler, $2 a piece. maybe we should do a group buy? (though i still have 47 left )g-boaf wrote:I hope I have no need to buy any more of those! Comparison - Conti GP4000s from well known Parramatta LBS near Grose Street - normally $114.95, on special at $69.95. From Wiggle, I got them for about $36 each.

I did a bulk buy of tubes too, although only 10, not 50. I think it turned out to be around $3 a tube.george-bob wrote:i got sick of buying tubes at $5+ a pop so i bought a box of 50 bulk from a wholesaler, $2 a piece. maybe we should do a group buy? I just had a look at my Wiggle order history and I've apparently spent more in 2013 than I realised. Garmin 500 and two BBs, winter tops and under layers, tyres, tubes and levers, and the latest was the Go-Pro mounts.
Then there's the GoPro Hero 3 Black and accessories (plus the cost of the return to the USA for replacement), two Jumbo 808s #16s and battery packs, the bar end road mirror, more cycle clothing.
Running total: $2,080.07
Hmmm... That's more than the bike is worth. And I don't think I can say to my partner that riding a bike is cheaper than going by PT anymore. Maybe I'll just switch it to - "That's the cost of fitness, darling".

Got a few friends that have been trying to pick up cycling for more than a year despite have bought nice bikes at the beginning. They spent next to nothing on anything else include clothing - hence they always have excuses not to ride, e.g. no cloth, no lights, no spare tubes..
I supply these friends with frame pumps, tubes, tyres, clothing, parts and even servicing their bikes... but these are good friends returning with nice wine and dinners.
Lucky wife agrees it is investment on friendship

Too much bike for me. I had my eye on the SL0 but when I crashed my old bike there was 14 week wait for the sl 0 and given the price of the di2 bits was the difference between the sl1 and sl0 I got the sl1.g-boaf wrote:
