Hi All,

On 4th May 2013 twelve intrepid riders will set off from the Storey Bridge in Brisbane and cycle ONE THOUSAND Kilometres to arrive at Sydney Harbour Bridge on the 11th May. The planned route will follow the New England Highway with overnight stops at Warwick, Tenterfield, Glen Innes, Armidale, Tamworth, Scone, and Morisett.

Funds raised from the event will be donated to the Cure for Life Foundation. This money will go towards advancing brain tumour treatments and research.

http://www.cureforlife.org.au

The ride coincides with Brain Cancer Action Week, which runs from 4th May until 10th May. The cyclists will be dropping into schools and Councils during the ride to spread the word about the work being done by this fantastic foundation in helping people who are affected by these terrible brain cancers.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am just posting to raise awareness of this ride and the cause. I have signed up for this fantastic event (check out the rider list on the website). I am absolutely excited for it and have started plans for both training and fundraising.

My fundraising page on EverydayHero will be set up shortly. I will also be creating a blog where I plan to write about my training, fundraising and the ride itself.

Will post up the links here once they are set up.

Thanks everyone and safe cycling,
Rob

Thanks! Fundraising is going well and the training is on track (roughly - the wet February Brisbane had made for soggy training days).

Looking forward to the adventure and fighting the good fight.

+1.

If the route follows the New England HWY then it will probably be slightly more than a thousand Km.
Especially considering some extra Km would be likely if using lesser traffic roads between Morisett and Sydney Harbour bridge.

Thanks everyone. Yeah i do think we will probably notch up over 1,000km - There will be some extra distances when we pull into each town and take the backroads etc.
I am not too worried about the distance really (we are aiming for about 120kms a day) but more the fatigue and tiredness of riding those kms for 8 days straight. I bought a fancy foam roller and have been doing stretching most days to avoid any muscle injuries.

That being said, the first day of the ride is Brisbane to Warwick (150kms) up the Cunninghams gap climb. So thats one way to seperate the men from the boys from the crying babies. Wonder which group i'll be in :)

Hi Rob, was good to meet you on saturday morning riverloop ride http://m.bicycles.net.au/forums/viewtop ... start=1325

The next day i had quite a fun ride along the old New England highway from Dalveen to Stanthorpe, a distance of about 22 km, and return
This is beside the new highway and would probably be worth considering as an alternative to actually riding on the Highway for this section.

Now the bad news, yesterday i drove back to Brisbane from Warwick.
In 30 years of driving this stretch of road it was the slowest trip ever. (Except for the time my old Corona had engine failure)
There was heaps of traffic, much of it noisy B doubles with pantech or tipping trailers.

There was about ten places where there were traffic controllers at Roadworks.
At most of these points there were large tailbacks at the Stop sign.
Most of the traffic control was between the Kalbar turnoff and Warwick, especially between Aratula and the start of Cunningham's Gap.

That will certainly add to the challenge unfortunately mate.
Dunno if it will be much better by the time your event commences.

Thanks for the update Elantra. Appreciate the heads up.

Ill pass it onto Randal the ride organiser - he might be able to do a reroute in spots.
But sounds like we might be "stuck in traffic" for abit on the first day :)

Ill try and keep my blog updated with some photos/words. Eventually ill post them on here too. See you all in a week!
