Price for a carbon bike after road crash?

Postby embee8 » Fri May 03, 2013 5:11 pm

Hi, a few months back I was hit by a car while riding my Cannondale carbon fibre bike. Very fortunately, I received no breaks (just bruises, scrapes and scratches; and I'm going to phyiso weekly) but the bike certainly did break  .

Hopefully you can see one of the cracks from this photo (there are a couple of other cracks too). Both wheels are broken, cleats quite scratched too.

Well, I was holding onto the frame to send to a repairer (in due course, when I get the cash), when a mate has said he'd like to buy it from me.

So, my question is, what would a fair price be (for me and him) ... thanks.

If I was in your position and got fair compensation after the crash so that I was able to replace my bike, I would be inclined to give the old frame away.

The repairs on the frame won't be cheap...

Sorry but I value that bike at nothing, given the damage that is visible let alone that that isn't. It's toast I reckon.

Agree, the impact to the seat tube alone makes it worth 0 IMO, not sure if that's even repairable but if it was it would be hundreds of dollars.

It is only worth repairing if it was a high value frame, yours appears to be a base Cannondale (Six Carbon?, maybe super six?)....that sort of damage is not worth fixing on that frame.

Is damage like that ever really repairable? Surely if that lot was laid up with new carbon fibre, the characteristics of the frame would be completely changed and there would still be weak points in the finished job.
I'm no expert but I don't see how that could be repaired to be anything like original.

I thought you said the guy was a mate?
No way I would ride that myself or let anyone else ride it either.
Do your "mate" a favour.
Cut it up and take it to the tip.

Ok, thanks all. I value your replies. Thought it would be a goer but safety is more important than anything else.
To the tip it goes.

From some of the photos I've seen of bikes that Paint My Bike in Brisbane have done, I think it would be repairable, but even if you gave him the frame for nothing, I doubt it would be worth doing.

There's someone on this forum somewhere who wants unusable carbon frames for an art project. If you're just gonna tip it, consider giving it to him/her. Can't quite recall which thread/board.

If you dropped your bike against a door frame and the top tube cracked then yeah, send it to Paint My Bike for a repair. The fact you got HIT BY A CAR means the total construction of the bike is compromised and therefore not safe to ride anymore.

Carbon can crack upon impact. Its the severity of impact that will determine the future safety. Dropped against a coffee table at the cafe? Fix it. Slammed by a car door at 30kph to a dead stop? Ditch it.
