With a bit of work you could end up with a great rider for little money. Joe Cosgrove can repair glued frames.

Picked up this 979 near complete, minus the seat post  for $50
I thought the 979 had a seat bolt or grub screw, but this one has the internal expanding 25mm seatpost. normal?
Has 600 tri colour levers, hubs, FD
the rest is a mix of goods.
Sun semi aero clinchers

anyway few pics (bad but ill take some more)

expanding post is normal - they worked out that the grub screw was killing aftermarket seatposts i guess, and changed to the quill style. can't remember when, but google should know.

But the bad news is.... a seat post costs $1200.

Sorry, envy took control.

It will be a stunner.

HAHAHA
I did get the original seat post with it, just missing the seat clamps. There is a bike builder here that told me to bring it in and he will see if he has any clamps that might fit.

Fingers crossed.....

Munga,
it seems there were 50,000 of the Vitus Carbone 3's made in the period 1978-1984
There were a variety of decals and placements
in no particular order
sample A
sample B
sample C (which I think you already know about)
and a recent one sold on e bay
as the e bay ones will be lost over time, here is an closeup of the down tube, and the whole bike (as proof it is a Carbone 3).
I would suggest that, over the production of the frame, the decals changed and there were more of them (top tube and down tube replacing the seat tube in block font)

Is there any evidence of other decals on your frame?

Have a good look at the last two images, (ie the ones from e bay). It looks to my eye as from the same period as the decal presented above produced by Greg Softley, which is the general period for your bike.
Might be worth an approach to Greg with a good close up image of your bike decal, with measurements to see if he can resize and restyle to match your vintage. As he has the base artwork it would be a quick job to do the required modifications.

I hope that is of some help

So, I recently acquired a 979 frame. However, the fork that came with it is a Kinesis 6061 fork.
I don't know if this what it originally came with or if this is a replacement. I have seen a photo of at least one other Vitus with this fork. Does anyone know if it was just a later cost cutting measure or is it just I have been sold a pup?

Thanks!!

I've joined the appreciation society for better or worse :-)
I got a frameset from a fellow club member and forumite dv recently. I originally declined because the aluminium fork steerer was knackered and I don't need the headaches that something like that was going to cause me. Remarkably the day after Dennis offered it to me a Vitus fork came up for sale with a steel steerer. Fork cost more than the frame.
Anyway I think I have an '86 model with the binder bolt seatpost clamp. It came with a campy BB and headset. The parts bins offered up a Gipiemme crankset, Simplex retrofriction shifters, Turbo saddle in brown and an 80's or 90's wheel set that will do for now (Shimano DuraAce hubs to Ambrosio rims). I'm relieving Spirito of a job lot of mostly Mavic stuff to complete the picture, I believe some of it came off his Vitus that came to grief with an errant ped. (tx Ben)
Gold tubes, minimal decals - just one on the down tube and one each side of the fork. By all accounts these are a nice bike for lighter riders on rougher roads, I'm really looking forward to the ride. Could be my steed for the Beverley Heroic 2017?

Now that's something I've never seen before, a threaded aluminium steerer. That's what, under 1.5mm wall thickness isn't it?
