I've had three roadie mates buy Giant XTCs recently, and they are all egging me on to get one.
Can I get one up on them by getting better value? What say ye?

Ahem. Make that 4.
Very good value for money in that price bracket.

I know where there is a small one going for under a grand in Melb, brand new. Was too small for me.

I bought an XTC at the beginning of the year so I've (semi) recently been through the research phase. XTC is the best value for money sub $1500 bike in my opinion. I picked mine up for $1250 from Tom Wallace Cycles in Brisbane and love it. Definitely recommend dealing with TWC... I even drive 30 mins past numerous shops to get there.

I'd go second hand. Should be able to get a decent carbon rig in that price range.
Check out the rotorburn forums. Lots of mountain bikes for sale there.

100 bucks over budget but worth a look imo!
