All Round Wheels

Postby averagerider » Wed May 08, 2013 10:44 pm

Hi people

Firstly I realise all wheels are round but didn't know what else to call them

I'm 180cm about 87kgs
Have up to $1000
Would prefer to stay away from carbon as I probably wouldn't treat them right
Flat terrain mainly but am increasing the amount of trips I'm doing to climb

A lot of knowledgable people on here and was wondering if you can give some ideas

Thanks heaps for any replies
Luke

I'll throw my hat in the ring with the Pro-Lite Merano. They are a great all-round performance wheelset for a bigger rider.

Fulcrum and Pro-Lite are both pretty good, worth searching the forum as there is plenty of info to be found

also look at the shimano rs80, i am 100kg and have had no issue with them in opver 3 years. a bit more price is the dura-ace c24 same rim and spokes but a better hub.

check out the reviews of them online

I've got the 7900 Dura Ace C24 and done about 20,000km on them and they seem great so far, fairly light and pretty robust.

The RS80s are a good wheelset. I've had mine for some three years now, been raced/trained/commuted on for quite a few kms. Still round and true, never had to touch them (did rebuild hubs twice). Unfortunately I've chewed through the rim (I blame this on winter commuting). I'm a bit of a lightweight at 69kgs these days, but the wheels were ridden back when I was +80kgs.

Looking for a new wheelset now with a budget similar to your own. Very hard to look past the Dura-ace 9000 c24, I'd buy another set of rs80s but feel the need to upgrade (yeah that extra 100g is really slowing me down).

Custom options.

Alchemy or Chris King Hubs
Sapim CX-Ray spokes
Pacenti, H Plus Son or HED alloy rims.

These options should be within your budget. Otherwise if you want to save a bit of money you can try White Industries hubs.

I have some Fulcrum Quattros, which i quite like. Reasonable aero profile, but not terrible in higher cross winds. Weigh in at 1700g, so not terribly heavy, and well priced.

Mate has a pair of Meranos and Braccianos, and likes them too. Ive ridden his Meranos while i was waiting for my Quattros and i quite liked them too.

PG & usernameforme when you speak of custom made do you mean you build them yourself or there are shops that make them for you.
If there are shops where is the best place you recommend?

Or also consider the Kinlin XC-279 rim.

Yes I built a wheelset with that rim and very pleased with it. Quite a strong rim thanks to its width and depth. Lovely ride thanks to be able to run 10psi lower pressure. Cornering is very good.

Dan at Shifter bikes is often recommended for wheel building but many shops will offer to build custom wheels for you. In Melbourne's nothern suburbs there is Commuter cycles and Jetnikoff cycles.

TWE wheels would fit in your budget and I am heavier than you and I love my TWE's

Give Greg a call and have a chat about what you want, as I said I love my wheels, they have transformed my bike and was under $1000

Most bike shops should have a wheelbuilder, probably worth going around and asking at your local shops. There a few online builders too in Aus, like TWE mentioned earlier. A set of Pacenti SL23s/H+Son Archetypes laced to Alchemy hubs would be great for you, although that might start pushing the budget a little...
