New Rider Extra's
Postby gururug » Tue Feb 20, 2007 9:48 am
I thought it might be interesting to list the total cost of extra expenses I have spent in addition to my new bike to give new riders a heads up on the additional costs that are involved getting into the sport.
Here is a list of what I acquired, sure, you can do wothout some / most of it though i'd be surprised if most roadies did not own these accessories and equipment.
Here goes;
Shoes 180
Gloves 25
Frame Pump 70
Big Pump 50
Bidon 10
Computer 100
Tail Light 70
Front Light 40
HRM 50
Two Knicks 150
Jersey 50
MultiTool 80
Repair+Levers 12
Spare Tube 12
Cleaning Eq 40
Total 939
So you can see, the extras can add up, its a bit shocking actually.
If I add a helmet and shorter crankset / stem to that I will be up around the total cost of my bike ($1799).
Gee Wizzz.........

Nah, you need good headlights, that way you can identify what it is you've just run into
Lighting is a real fun issue. For normal roads, with street lights, you only need to be seen. BUT, get onto a completely blacked out road, like I had to commute on in the nineties, and a generator and halogen lighting is WONDERFUL .
The Mongoose Randonneur with their generator in the front hub have this part of the equation right. You may never need that amount of lighting, but the first time you do, you really DO

BTDT - didn't scratch the bike but by cripes my heart rate hit new highs

Only thing I have bought was a headlight, helmet shoes and computer.
Tail light - free
Bottlecage - free
rack for back - free
pump - free
tools - free
I have even managed to fit my sisters bike out with free computer and lights etc. People throw their old bikes out and leave these bits on them. Sometimes I am even lucky when I score the tool bag as well.

Some bikes don't come with pedals so you can add another couple of hundred for these.

The other way to get a good deal is when you purchase a bike from a shop. Usually, if you are paying the standard price for the bike, you can get some accessories thrown in or at least get a decent mark down off the retail price. It never hurts to ask.

The real cost of anything can be scary - the cost of raising a kid is astronomical - bikes are relatively cheap.
It's like all hobbies - their cost expands to fit your discretionary spending!
Let's all observe a minute's silence for 'discretionary spending' - and long may it remain 'discrete'.
