"A Metre Matters Awareness Ride" Friday 17th May

As one of the CBD BUG co-convenors I am posting this.

Following the tragic death of Richard Pollett the CBD BUG with support for the Amy Gillett Foundation are holding an awareness ride this Friday the 17th of May for the need to have a Minimum passing distance between Bicycles and Motor Vehicles. We have arranged to have a police escort during the ride.

At this current time all three Co-convenors of the CBD BUG will be attending the Ride, Paul, Kate and me.



The ride will proceed regardless of the weather.

Day/date: Friday 17 May 2013

Pre-ride briefing: 7.15am

Departure time: 7.30am

Ride starts: Kenmore Village Shopping Centre carpark (adjacent to

the Kenmore roundabout, Moggill Rd)

Ride ends: Centenary Bikeway, at junction with Moggill Rd

Ride distance: Approximately 3km

Seems like a good ride and I hope a lot of people turn up (I'm in NSW though). A little question , why don't you get the 1.5 metre passing message across? Then you could get more people aware of the petition and hopefully get more people to sign it.

The CBD BUG did post a tweet a couple of days ago regarding the e-petition. The CBD BUG is in agreement with the AGF in that a 1m is a more practical goal than 1.5m. It should be stressed that 1m is the bare minimum and naturally more distance is to be always desired. The main point is that we are all in agreement that a minimum passing distance is required to reduce the risk of dangerous motor driver behaviour

Would be smart to bring messaging into line with the petition though...
Otherwise it will be easy for those who oppose it to dismiss it on the grounds of "even the cyclists can't agree"...

Simple messages get traction...

Promoting two safe passing distances is not a simple message...

For the purpose of this ride, the call for a set distance is secondary at this stage to Brisbane's cycling famy showing their support for the Pollett family. Please everyone, remember what's important here, that is remembering Richard and all those we've lost over the years.
Thanks to the CBDBUG hosting the petition link we have seen well over 3,200 signatures in the first week.
RSD to everyone who fronts up tomorrow morning, and for Richard, rest in peace buddy.

Some thoughts from this mornings ride:

Firstly, I was very pleased with the turnout this morning, and personally very pleased I was there.

I feel a very strong sense of injustice regarding the jury decision in regards to the Richard Pollett trial, and to the pervailing attitude of motorists towards vulnerable road user safety more generally. So it was good to see a strong show of support.

I was one of the last riders to leave the carpark, and shared a very appreciative nod of respect with Richard's parents as I left. As doting parents who have lost their only child, I think its important to show them that they are not the only ones who feel let down by the justice system and want to see change to prevent it happening to others in the future.

Bruce Flegg never returned my emails from earlier in the week, but he was there and did an interview for channel 7. So hopefully it will get some airplay.

The police car escort showed up just in time too. My (limited) experience with Indooroopilly Police Station over a range of minor cycling issues over the years has been positive actually, so thanks to them for their support too.

Lastly, it was nice to see a few familiar faces from these forums and to finally put faces to many forum regulars for the first time (form here and Brisbane Cyclist). A good effort by a number of North siders and others who travelled some good kms to be there.

Womble's e-petition was highlighted again. Please sign it if you haven't already, and please encourage as many other people you know to do the same. As Paul French (CBD BUG co-convenor) noted this morning, similar laws exist in 27 other countries around the world, so all of the excuses about why it can't be done are just bollocks if you really care about the issue.

I was very happy I went this morning. I hope it gave some comfort to the family that so many other people felt strongly enough about it to ride on the first really chilly morning this year.

Same. It got a bit tricky changing across the lanes just before we turned off onto the bicentenial, but a 4wd there was letting us change lanes so I gave them a friendly wave. Edit: It was a very nice lady in a Honda CRV 031 REM, she was giving us all a nice smile I see in my rear camera Thankyou!

There were a few beeps from cars travelling in the opposite direction, hopefully they were beeps of support. I didn't know the police turned up, didn't see them. Also didn't know Richard's parents were there but in retrospect I did see them - I'm glad that they are still involved enough and able to come. I was very, very upset by the court decision, so I can't imagine how hard it is for them. Good work by everybody who turned up to show their support.
