Postby reeva65 » Mon May 13, 2013 6:23 pm

Just picke up this beautiful Bullock bicycle. Looks like a track frame with cruiser hub. Wheels look original.
Would anyone care to shed some light on what ages this might be or any other info?
Serial No 17 279
Might be interested in selling, Offers welcome.

Thanks.

If you want to sell it pop over to the marketplace and put a price on it :) (don't forget to read the marketplace rules)
If you're looking for best offers or any kind of bidding action you might be better off on eBay

what he said :) 50-150 would be good, its pre war, but Im always doubtfull of the internal condition of plated frames, could be utterly rotten

Looks like my old school bike with the handlebars turned down. Track bikes don't normally have bolted rear forks.

They did way, way back tween the wars, but I also think this looks more like a road bike. However, it has the nicer rear dropouts to take the 'snail cam' chain adjusters and slim rear stays so it would have once been of reasonable quality. Missing the cam stops and the adjusters themselves tho, probably got dumped with the original rear wheel.
I would say that every component on the bike except the headset (and possibly the chainset) has been replaced with much later kit over the years as it got handed down and relegated to commuting and hacking around.
Big restoration job...
Cheers
Richard

Thanks for the interesting info. It still a beautiful bike.
I might get the nickel plating re done on the frame, forks and wheels. I know things can only be original once but i think this one look great re done.. Any ideas?

cost to re nickel will be way above its value finished, could be getting up near 1K worth there (all up) , doubt youll find anyone who can do the rims. Best to leave it as is and pass it on maybe

Yet another vintage Australian bike made for the short of shank.

We're all Aussies 80 odd years ago no taller than 5' 6"?

To restore the finish and remove a lot of the green spots Id get some 0000 steel wool and some metho (or maybe even linseed oil for lubrication) and give it a good going over. need to take care though and id start with the ultra fine steel wool (the four zero 0000) as that should not scratch anything. Wipe it all down after and clear coat it. I'd bet it would come up pretty nice - no need to get it re done. Shellac goes fine over the oil - but you would have wiped it down of course. Probably best to use metho/thinners if you are using a commercial clear coat.

For some of those more full on rust spots of course you need to get a bit more aggressive there ( sandpaper or scraper). clean it up and ride it as is.

Heights of people have increased over the last 100 plus years and many old houses had much shorter doorways as a testament to height change.
