Pedals recommendations

Postby leighthebee » Mon May 20, 2013 9:30 pm

Have a pretty basic Mtb. A Hardrock hardtail. I've just been riding on the flats that it was supplied with. Now I'm doing a bit more I'm going to put clip ins on it. What do people like for pedals and shoes?

I use Shimano SPD pedals and have been for the past 20 years. And normally combined with Shimano shoes except for about 3 years when I had some Answer ones.

I have the DX downhill ones, XT trail pedals, lower level trail ones and normal ones without an outer cage.

Time pedals always get good reviews.

Buy the best model pedals you can afford. Shimano ones don't seem to wear out. I have had a cheap pair (Shimano 515, not cheap at the time) since 2000. I recently met a guy riding the same pedals since the early 1990's.

These are what I would buy.

Hard to go past Shimano IMO. I've been tempted to try Time pedals a few times but have baulked simply because I started out on Shimano MTB pedals and already have a stash of cleats etc. I use Time pedals on my road bike and may still try Time MTB pedals some day.

The XT pedals are supposed to be very good, but unless you want a platform, buy the M540 pedals instead as they are identical to the XT of a year or two ago (M770) except for the XT graphics (the internals and mechanism are identical as far as I can see) and are about $20 less.

yeah go shimano spd, something like 540s or 520s are pretty cheap. Been using them for over 20 years now and currently have the 959,636 and the current XT's and they are all very good (use them on the mtb and road bike). Like the look of the new Look ones coming out, but will probably never change from shimano.
Plus loads of people use them so the chance of giving someone elses bike a test ride and having compatable pedals goes up.

Agree. I had some XT M770 pedals that had a bearing problem in one side so now retired. :( I've also got 540s, two sets of 520s and early '90s M525s which the bearings are still good, but have far less float and weigh 508g. I think the 540s are the pick. Although many may say the 540s and 520s are the same except for weight, I believe the 540s have a better cleat grip than my two sets of 520s. With the 520s the cleat feels looser vertically for the same tension adjustment than the 540s IMO.

+1 more for Shimano, either 520's or 540's as cheap enough to try before you splash out on some flash ones - but most people are happy with 540's.
