bought a mosso rigid fork on fleabay. fingers crossed now...

Wrestled some slick/city tyres onto my rims last night and cleaned up the rims and brake pads. Can't wait to get the forks on it. I'll experiment with the 42 and 32 tooth front chainrings to see which works best and then go get the chain shortened if needed.

I'm actually thinking about sanding it back and respraying the beast a solid colour to cover up all the "TREK" stickers. I'd prefer a more stealthy look.

Run the 42 front - you'll need about a 15/17 rear to deal with your hills. I was commuting on 46/16 Everton Park ---> City for about 6 months. Safe to say I ride geared bikes now.

I run 46 front and 11-30 rear and find myself down the bottom 11/12/13 a fair bit. 'cept when i ride up(to belair) daily at present ~ 500m elevation. I'm 700c, you would be even lower rollout on 26 inch wheelz.

I've done a few commutes and river loop since resurrecting the mtb. The 42 tooth chainring is fine for my needs. Dropped the chain once, so will have to look at my options there.

Check chainline, then grab a half link if your chain tension is off. Otherwise you're playing with sprocket chainring combos to get tension right, which will be more difficult if you want to keep the 42 front.

Any pics??

Its still got gears dan, so chain tension is an issue.

I'm confused now. Aren't we in the fixed/SS forum? ;)

In the meantime, screw down the fd to stop the chain going mental at the end, and remove links so the chain isn't sloppy. Should fix it until you decide on rear sprocket count.

Shorter chain and a shorter cage rd should fix it - provably have one here in the shed you can have if you fancy a trip over to Everton Park.

For what it's worth, I think 1x8 is a very good idea.

I prefer your old trek over a cheap fixie.

If you ever want to get rid of the SID pm me.

Cheers. Was googling and it looks like you can buy seal rebuilt kits for the SID, so I might hang onto it for now. If anything changes I'll let you know. Will see how the mosso rigid fork goes..

Couple of noob questions about installing forks into headset..

The steerer (the silver alloy part that pokes up through the frame?) flares out a bit at the bottom inch or so, on both the Rock Shock SID I removed and the new rigid fork I'm trying to install. It was quite difficult to get the lower bearing bits off the old fork. Do I need to press the bearing down onto the flared bit of the new fork or am I ok to give it a whack with a mallet etc? I didn't want to force it, for fear of breaking something. The bearing is stuck about an inch up from the fork crown currently....

Also, the new fork is a fair bit wider and flatter at the bottom of the steerer than the old old setup. The lower bearing will look a bit weird up against the wider crown thingo.. Is that ok functionally?

Oh and the star nut thing is jammed into the steerer of the old fork and I can't get it out (doing it's job I presume). Are these a single fitment item and do i just buy a new one for the new fork? If so, where from?

Sorry for the stupid questions.

pic of the gap....

The bottom bearing race needs to be siting flush at the bottom of the fork steerer. Take it to the bike shop and they can ram it into place with the right seating tool.

Star nut is generally a single use item. You may be able to hammer it through and out the bottom of the steerer, but unlikely.

Apparently the right size of PVC tube can be used to press the crown race down (bit of the headset that lives on the fork on the taper section). Alternatively find something not hard/sharp and knock it down into place. Probably not recommended, but I have just overtightened the headset then released tension to help get it into place, bit of a ride helps settle it too.

As long as the bearing doesn't rub on t he fork when seated having a wider fork flange shouldn't affect the function of the headset.

Thanks Scott & bychosis. I don't have any poly pipe the right size, so might take it up the LBS. I'll need a new new star nut anyway. The steerer tube is almost exactly the same length as what was on there, which is a bonus.

I didn't want to use the frame itself to ram the crown race down for fear of munching the bearings.

Cheers.

Friendly dudes at the LBS sorted me out with pressing the crown race on properly and also gave me a star nut for the new fork. They had the right tools for the job. All installed and sorted out now. Feels great with the light/stiff fork on the front. Great for wheelies!

I might go back and get a new chain put on next. I have a feeling the one on there is the original.... from 13-14 years ago!

pics. Sorry about the reflective tyre strips!

Good thinking re fenders. Mind you, I might lay low for a bit given how much I've spent on bikes lately...
