Fleet Cycles Leaving Fremantle

Postby Aushiker » Sat Jun 01, 2013 2:41 pm

Fleet Cycles are leaving Fremantle ...

A BIKE shop is the last business you might expect to leave Fremantle.

But for Fleet Cycles on Adelaide Street the bike boom is over.

Owner Mikey Boulton told the Herald falling trade and a lack of planning vision is failing big parts of the port city. SOS surf shop next door closes in September.

“Freo is a great place for coffee and festivals but as far as shopping districts go … it’s losing its way,” Mr Boulton says.

Halfway through his five-year lease of the council-owned store, he says he can no longer afford his rent nor risk seeking alternative premises in Fremantle.

By June 30 the 400sqm shop will be empty, with stock and staff transferred to his store in Mandurah, where he is doing a roaring trade.

I'm sure his patrons in Freo will miss him a great deal. If the atmosphere and service there is half of what his Mandurah store is, it will be a big loss to Freo. Standard of service is what separates his shop from other local shops and keeps us off the web looking for bargains.

Shame, but that part of Freo doesn't seem to get a lot of foot traffic.

Sad. Never bought a bike for myself there (daughter got one) but was often there for small stuff.

Wonder what will happen to Bike Force which is just up the road?

It's an odd part of Freo that. The Woolworths complex across the road is always very quiet. It's a great place to do a weekly shop if you don't like crowds.

I went in yesterday. No customers and old stock.

With Mercer Cycles at one end of town and Bike Force book-ending the other, plus that new bike shop on Paddy Troy Lane. Fleet probably find themselves in an unfortunate position. That East End is also very quiet.

I've only ever shopped at Mercer and Bike Force.

Rode past yesterday - closed and redirecting customers to Bike Force which is 100 m up the road. There was also a phone number to contact Fleet if required.
