Puncture Proof Tyre Punctured

Postby Hamster » Mon Jun 10, 2013 1:32 pm

To be fair it's probably not a puncture in that any air escaped but there is certainly one massive hole. I've replaced the tyre with one of the hard compound ones fearing for the safety of continuing to ride on one that cut about half way through. Up to this point I was seriously impressed with the tyre and I guess to be fair a rock like that would destroy any tyre.

The tyre has done around 3,000 kms.

However, Tannus advertises them with all sorts of things sticking out so perhaps they'll consider some sort of warranty replacement.

That's one mighty impressive rock. Hope you kept it -- it could go in a cycling rogue's gallery.

I rode home on it completely unaware of the problem, it was only when washing the bike that I noticed something that appeared to be stuck to the tyre.

Olivine impregnated basalt - the olivine is uber brittle, makes the aggregate fracture into sharper edged chunks than does solid basalt.

I emailed the pictures to Tannus Tyres Australia and asked if they would consider a replacement under warranty. In summary the anawer was that it wasn't a warranty claim but because it was so unusual they would give me a replacement tyre in exchange for the damaged tyre and rock :D :D .

Obviously I am pleased with the outcome and will continue using Tannus tyres for commuting.

So they'll check the rock for Tannus Tyre Kryptonite? :P

That's a good outcome.

My soft compound Tannus on my front wheel has now done 5,545 kms. It's certainly no longer new but I expect to get a lot more kilometers out of it. As a commuter tyre they are, in my opinion hard to beat.

So if someone glued the rock in and painted it to colour match the tread, you'd be none the wiser =D

(found your original thread after reference to this in another, so thought I'd raise it from the dead as I'm trying to get hold of a pair)

Did you install it yourself or have a local shop supply/fit them?
