Santos GLNG Brisbane to the Gold Coast Cycle Challenge 2013

Postby Bicycle Qld » Mon Jun 24, 2013 4:01 pm

Queensland's biggest bike ride is on again! Join thousands of other riders as they pedal 100km from South Bank, Brisbane, to Southport on the Gold Coast in the 2013 Santos GLNG Brisbane to the Gold Coast Cycle Challenge.

The ride begins at Brisbane’s South Bank with a 15km traffic free start along the South East Busway. After exiting the busway the course then follows a combination of service and suburban roads all the way to the Broadwater Parklands at Southport on the Gold Coast with a couple of rest stops in between. There is also a 60km option from Logan to the Gold Coast for those riders who aren’t quite ready for 100km, but still want to be part of the action!

In its ninth year, this Bicycle Queensland event aims to get more people cycling more often and will be actively fighting heart disease by raising vital funds the Heart Foundation. Heart disease is Australia’s number one killer - with someone having a heart attack every ten minutes. Money raised through this event will be used for research, prevention strategies and advocating positive, healthy choices in the community.

The Santos GLNG Brisbane to the Gold Coast Cycle Challenge is on Sunday 20 October and early bird entries open on 1 July, 2013.

Been a few years since I did this ride, might do it again this year, it was definitely enjoyable last time (2008 I think :? )

why don't you run it in September when the chance of rain is significantly less?
Some riders travel here from interstate and as far as Cairns. Not fair for them when rain sees the ride canceled.

Wear extra padding in yer helmets this year for the waved placards from coal seam has protesters. Hopefully they don't try anything dumb on the day of one of Qld's favourite events. Chill hairy legged tree huggers, chill.

I'll be there. If its good weather I might try for a 2h30m ride :P

Hopefully the tree huggers don't show up. As if there presence is going to make me want to avoid riding my bike.

I'll be in the 2.30-3hr bracket which is roughly a 35-40kph average. I just need to start at the front so I'm not at the very back constantly passing people

well if you're happy with 2:45, maybe we can start a BNA group?

If there is a favourable tail wind like last year then you guys should be right! I was near the front for the start and got in with a good group. We knocked it over in 2hr 21min.

The favourable tail wind on the way down made for a tough ride back afterwards though!! Mixed with temps up to 39 degrees, im not sure i will be doing the return journey again this year :P

I did it in 2.47 last year. (I put it mostly down to tail wind  ) I'm now about 10kg lighter and much fitter, interested to see if i could do it quicker. I'd be up for a group for sure. Last year I started a fair way back and was either off the back of a group or trying to catch one in front. Would love to share in a bit of protection from the wind this year.

For me last year I did it in 2.50 (just over 3hr in total including changing front and rear GoPro batteries/refilling waterbottles that left the house half empty) but spent most of the run to Beenleigh overtaking people, getting caught in small crowded packs and trying to avoid people making contact/overlapping wheels.

I did it on my flat bar last year in 3:03 ride time 3:13 total (had to stop and fill up the water bottles)

I'd be in as well, last year thanks to the lovely tail wind I did the ride in 3:10, solo.
This year, if we have favorable weather conditions, I was planning on doing the ride non-stop, in a bunch would make that easier!
