Hi all,
Apologies if this has been covered.
I was running my Tricolour 600 setup with friction shifters which was working fine and now I switched over to a set of matching series (I assume) Tricolour 600 STIs. The FD STI just doesn't have as much cable pull to move the FD enough laterally as the chain rubs on the cage or can't change rings properly. Then I read that some 600 (or old) FDs are not compatible with STIs as the FD mechanism is different to more modern FDs which provide more lateral movement for STIs?
And I've checked that the limit stop screws are fine for the FD.
Do I have an older series 600 FD which only work with DT shifters and not compatible with the spare 600 STIs that I have?

Which exact series FD and STIs do you have?
I'm had friction downtube shifters with my RX100 FD, but swapped over to RX100 STIs. The levers move the FD just fine. Same with my 105 FD(1055) has 105(5500) STIs, and they work fine together.
Make sure when adjusting cables, you have shifted into the small chainring losition(click the smaller lever a couple times).

Tricolour should from memory be 6400 series, which I'm pretty sure was STI specced from day 1 (it'd be the first series of 600/Ultegra that was STI). Check that the shifter is actually clicking into gear; it's quite common for the grease in the older shifters to dry out & turn cheesy, preventing the little ratchets from working & engaging properly. Try spraying plenty of light lubricant into the shifter mechanism & work it back & forward for a while to see if that frees it.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Is your derailleur the 8 speed specific FD-6401 and not the 7 speed FD-6400?

The 6400 tricolor group started as a 7 speed downtube shifter group, then moved to 8 speed STI (think it might have been about the 6403 model?). I have run the STI shifters with the "7 speed" FD no worries at all, actually pretty sure I still am. The STI shifters have I think at least 1 trim setting for the smaller ring, as well as a trim setting for the larger ring.

I think the FD is FD-6400-B (88-91, 7spd group) which according to below swings out at 45deg compared to FD-6401??
http://velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx? ... 2&Enum=113" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
and the STIs are ST-6400 (92-97 8spd):
http://velobase.com/ViewComponent.aspx? ... 5&Enum=125" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The STI clicks and shifts the FD cage so I had it working but the outer side of the cage would still rub while on the big ring and the inner side of the cage while on the small ring with no more trimming left in the STI (if you get what I mean). Maybe I didn't have the STI completely on the lowest clicked range when I fed the cable through it as the grease is most likely a bit gunked up?
I've ungunked some RSX100 STIs before so I should give these ones a good going over and see if that helps.

Now, that RX100 and 105 derailleurs I have are of the same age, and are the ones which swing out at 45 deg as well. Im using the 105 with 9 speed and does not rub, and will soon upgrade to 10 speed. I really do reckon that you may have put the cable in when the lever was not in the small chainring position.
You can follow my guides on the RSX/RX100 levers for cleaning as they are essentially the same, but I will be putting up a specific 6400 guide up next week(most likely Monday).

I think so too that I haven't fed the cable when completely on the small ring position as it felt a bit jammed from gunked up grease. Your cleaning guide was handy so I'll allocate some time to give it a good clean on the weekend as it tested my patience last time when I tried cleaning an STI for the first time without detailed guides

It appears that my (pre-STI) FD-6400-B doesn't get enough cable pull from my ST-6400 STI which I assume is why they revised it to FD-6401 with a shorter pivot arm at 90deg for mechanical advantage.lloyd83 wrote:I think the FD is FD-6400-B (88-91, 7spd group) which according to below swings out at 45deg compared to FD-6401??

I'm going to try out a spare FD-6500 which has a shorter pivot arm at 90deg although it's "Ultegra" sticker will clash with the rest of the group :0
