Cycling through Turkey

Postby Apple » Wed Jun 26, 2013 7:21 pm

My husband and I have decided to go to Turkey next year, so I thought it was nice to take the pinarello over there and ride. My husband can be my support crew following me with a hired car But I was wondering if anyone knows if I should get some hijab Lycra or would I be ok with my normal lycra. I am just not sure about this, you know wouldn’t want to offend anyone.

Wow, I am getting so many emails asking me to join on a group ride. :D this is amazing, Fatima from Istanbul said she has an all-women’s team leaving from the markets every Saturday at 5.30am riding a 40km ride down the camel drive route. My husband is not so sure, but he has been invited to play checkers with the husbands and have some Turkish Coffee. :D amazing hospitality.

I think I should write a blog.

Well, if you want a colourful cycling skirt to go over your leggings/tights instead of the black that most of those women are wearing, there are a few companies that do bright coloured cycling skorts or active skirts that go over the top and won't impede your pedalling. :) (They also do black too)

Those ladies must get a great sauna effect in the sun though (unless it is winter). I'd be boiling in that in anything over 10 degrees C.

How completely cool! I vote blog!

I looked half-seriously into sports hijab during my last phase of skin cancer paranoia, these don't look too bad ... and they're FIFA approved too!

Hi Apple,
I have a good friend just returned from an escorted cycling tour of Turkey and Greece and I posed your question to her. The following was her response:

"Just back from cycling tour in Turkey and wore lycra only on the road and never a problem – more considerate of dress code when in other places, but certainly no special clothing require from what I could find."

I am not sure if you would get a different response cycling solo compared to riding in a small group. I will ask more info on tomorrow morning's ride.

cheers (and keep us posted)

I thought that Turkey was not really a problem for women's dress.

Hi Apple, I have cycled through Turkey lots of times, in fact, we have just finished a ride through eastern turkey. I have also ridden through Iran so I am an expert on what to wear. You will not have problems wearing Knicks. I always wear a little skirt over my Knicks but I do that even in Australia as I feel uncomfortable if I don't.

You do not need to cover your hair even in eastern Turkey. In fact, wearing a hijab is illegal in Turkey if you have a public service job or you go to uni. I am not sure what kind of research you've done on Turkey but I think you might want to do more if you are under the impression you need to cover up.

Where in Turkey are you going?
