I have a spare pair of NOS dual-pivot RSX calipers, and it's fleetingly crossed my mind. But instinct says to restore what's on it.
Tomorrow I'll see what extra length there is in the stem, as I think I'll need it up a tad. But I can still stay era-ballpark if I have to.

Being hardly ridden, it's pretty spotless, but there must have been a paint flaw, as there's a small surface/bubbly rust area on a chain stay. My thought is to ease the paint off where it's bubbled, hit with a little Ranex, sand, then try and get a can made up at Auto-One. Should be able to get close enough. How would others deal with this?

Ricardo Elite Single speed..

Its a bit rough but I started with a old frame from gumtree and then added some wheels and a MTB crank... It needs a paint and cleanup... The frames had a few belts and the down tube has two big dings in it... Anyone have suggestions to remove them...

Image

I've since changed it a bit to add new bar tape and setup the saddle/seat post and removed front brakes...

Paint job to follow...

you were spot on.... 26.4 it was... And as suggested in another link the LBS were more that accomodating allowing to try the sizes to find the prefect fit....

Build coming along..

Ok,

Been riding this bike now for about two weeks.,.. And looking back through the pages of this thread I found some scanned pages of a late 80's catalogue,,, And in it was a bike that had the same slooping downtube as mine... I'd thought mine wa s an Elete,,, But its actually I think a Windcheater... And the colour scheme's almost perfect.... Except mine has the Forks as white with red fade on teh bottom and not the top....

When I got it it had
Shimano? rear deraileur marked Exage 300EX
Shimano BioPace crank marked FC-1050 on rear
FD Shimano 105
Non-marked alloy front brakes with 739A..
downtube shifters were marked 105....

The Serial number for the bike is; L7M1099

So I can't tell what of the installed gear was orriginal as none looks like whats in the catalog of that period...

Anyhow, for now all these bits are in a box and its a single speed...

Regards,

HEATH

Agree with the Windcheater ID...none of what was on it is original to the frameset but they're close to period correct which suggests that a previous owner quickly got tired of the original funny bike geometry..
Ours is not to reason why...merely to point and giggle

When I bought the Windcheater, the guy had a new chain fitted as well as 27x1" tyres. Not too keen on the 1"ers, and they're cheapies anyway. Anyone aware of a 27" tyre that's in the ballpark of Open Corsa CXs in 700C...that style? Or are my options pretty narrow. Am just heading towards wider diameter tyres is all.

I was looking for some 27 x 1's a few months ago and couldn't find much. I ended up getting a pair of Serfas Seca's in 27 x 1 1/4 from Europa in Kensington for around $45 apiece. They are a narrow but tall profile and felt much more comfortable on the road than the 27 x 1's but still just as fast. I have since done a tyre swap and fitted them to another bike which had panaracer paselas in 1 1/4 - the paselas seem to be rounder and even taller as they left no room for mudguards. The Seca's left enough room to fit mudguards - they don't feel quite as comfy as the paselas but they are possibly a little faster.

I scored some bontragers in 27 x 1 1/8 from another forum member for $10 a few weeks ago - haven't had the chance to test them out as yet though.

Good info., thanks jools. Ended up,ordering 2 of these. Pig-in-a-poke, but sound OK. I'll know soon. :| At least local, so freight not an issue. Shall include Kensington in the trawl next time around. I used to drop in there occasionally in the 70s.

Picked up a Ricardo Bushbike today, pretty sure it is an '89 as it is an 18 speed and has the oval chainrings and under frame rear brake. Gotta say it's rough, but not too bad mechanically and kinda retro cool. The plan is to sort out a couple of things it needs just as new head bearings and tyres (the others are rotted pretty badly) and then ride it for a little before pulling it down and doing a restore, so fresh paint, some polishing and a few little upgrades/changes. When that's all done I'll just ride it with the kids and to get the paper etc :)

Seems pretty original other than the seat.

Even had the shop sticker on it still, the guy I bought it off told me his mum bought it new (sounds like she is about my age) and he only stopped riding it because he was given a new bike.

Anyway, for $20 I was pretty pleased with it. Looking forward to riding it.

Cheers
Steve

they look ok - I might have to grab a pair or two for the other project bikes. I think there have been some favourable comments on the forums about the CST tyres

Most of the paint is just hanging in there ;) At least I can get a sample easily enough to match, just peel a piece off, the speckle thing will take a bit of trial and error but I've painted plenty of cars and motorbikes before to feel confident enough that I can get an original style finish.

Cheers

Hi All,
First time posting on the forum.

I am lucky enough to have a Ricardo 600 Ex as my daily ride. I bought it new from the factory at Regency Park in the 80's. I was all set to buy the Elite model, when they showed me the 600EX for a couple hundred dollars more. Back then it was around $1000. Complete with Shimano 600 groupset.
Original wheels still keep on turning.
Pictures of the bike can be seen at this link. https://www.dropbox.com/sc/m6ro1sfqwakhrko/gKpuW_OE0_" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Obvious changes to the bike have been some new tyres, bar tape, a comfy seat (still have the original rock hard blue seat) and pedals.
I still get on it 2 to 3 times a week to keep up some fitness.
I hope that you enjoy the pictures.

Cheers,
Erik.

So I picked this up for $100 bucks (Ebay Special)
Brakes: Dia Compe
Gears: Shimano Alts C50 15 Speed
Wheels: Araya
BB id: L3L1349

I 'think' bases on preliminary research it is a Ricardo Roadmaster. Though I would appreciate some feedback/input on this. (Year of manufacture etc)

I plan to upgrade the groupset to Shimano 600 (or similar)... and again, I am open to suggestion.

Aside from some damage to decals, she's in pretty good nick.

Thanks for posting those. Great to see a bike that old still being ridden in that way. Out of 3 bikes I have, 2 are Ricardos. :D

Windcheater

Elite

Only one problem; work to be done on both. But it's happening, sorta...

Looks like a nice old bike. Stem shifters and suicide brakes suggest it is not at the top of the pecking order, and the saddle is a bit pleased to see you, but as you say it looks to be in good nick & should be nice enough to ride

Yep, IIRC you have to wait until you have 10 posts, then it is easy enough - copying the photo url from ebay

Code: Select all

Sadly the above will stop working when Ebay purge the photo from their servers - you will need to organise your own photo hosting

very nice.

It looks like an early model of the Nuovo without the horrible white and yellow paint job.

Ps. I think there is some movement in your foundations
