Fixie-able?

Postby sheepdogg » Thu Jul 04, 2013 2:21 pm

Hi guys I picked up this Ken Evans off a literal scrap metal pile ( I work in scrap) was wondering if it was doable to fix 'er up and ride short distances on.
Was told the dint (which i'll post photos of) was okay and not to worry but have heard in another post that I would need a new tube.
It is damaged and I was hoping to restore it if possible or sell it on if the project proves too much for my abilities. I am also curious as too how much it would be worth once restored. It's made of steel and seems to be vintage.
Stamped underneath the frame above "cinelli" are the numbers "03?(possible 9)01" below those the serial number reads "BM?EY220290-04" Not sure it's an "M" possibly a "K" also reads "made in Italy"

You could've reused that last thread were you were pointed to the "how-to" but no big deal...

I can't make out the dent you've referred to?

I've got a Ken as well, but dissapointed it doesn't have any sort of serial or frame number to better date it.

I split that out of the eBay thread at the same time this thread was being created, not OP's fault. Whacked in a pic of the dint also.

Actually I am curious now - the OP quotes a serial number of his frame. As mine doesn't have anything like that - I am wondering how many other forum members with Kens have numbers on them?

Thank you im_no_pro I was sinking fast lol

I got the bike for free and realise I will most likely need to sink some serious cash into it if the tube needs replacing, anyone got any idea why it would have Cinelli stamped on the bottom thingamajiggy.
Thats serious Cyclist speech...

im_no_pro do you mind getting the photo of the Cinelli stamp for me or is that pushing my n00b luck?

;) well.. paraphrase.. I guess, not quote.

Cinelli made the shell. Most smaller volume frame builders purchase the tubing & components from the big name manufacturers. The most common you'll see are Columbus, Reynolds, Suntour, Tange etc etc.

Looks more like a casting number - as opposed to a serial.
Dare say it wouldn't be unique to this bike.

Can't make it out from the initial pic, but does it have the "K" pantographs on the fork crown? That certainly would increase residual value to someone with another Ken without it, or a damaged/missing fork - assuming it's a matching size.

And by your topic header; "fixie-able" I hope you meant "fixable" not "can I turn this into a fixie?" ;)

That is a Cinelli investment cast bottom bracket shell, lots oh high quality bikes have them (my Flying Gate for one). came as part of an investment cast lug set or you could buy them separate. HH is right that is just a part number.
One big creasey dent you have there, replacement down tube time...I would hazard a guess that the frame isn't straight anymore with that sort of damage.
Cheers

doesn't look like it - sheepdog what HappyHumber is referring to are pantographs on top of the fork like this

No it doesn't have the K on the forks which is unfortunate.
It does have a bike shop sticker on it but when I googled it they have shut down which again is unfortunate.I
was trying to be clever with "fixie-able" like is it fixable/should I make it a fixie. Didn't work obviously.
I know it's a matter of opinion but what's everyone's thoughts on it?
Fix, sell or toss back onto the scrap metal heap I found it on.

Research!

Find out what it would cost you to get it fixed first before deciding what to do.

To get the dint out and repaint it I'm looking at $400 plus

I'd be taking the advice of Richard about 8 post up. Shallow dents in steel tubes are generally fine and only cosmetic, as soon as you get a crease like appears in yours it will likely change the frame alignment and be prone to cracking. I wouldn't be riding the frame as it is. As I said earlier when you posted in the ebay thread, if you don't want to spend too much time and money on the frame, just sell the forks & headset and start again on something structurally sound. You found it at the scrap yard you work in, so you're already ahead :D .

I think the banana seat version with a sissy bar might be a goer.

+1, I have a couple of bikes that have small dents in them but that one looks to be a bit too much for my liking. Especially when it's that tube, I wouldn't like to see that crack, losing teeth hurts :) .
