Road Wheels

Postby jimconte » Fri Jul 12, 2013 2:03 pm

I have mavic cxp22 wheels with shimano sora hubs. I need a new rear wheel do you think that a shimano wh-r501 is about the same or an upgrade. I am also thinking about mavic ksyrium elite r these a massive upgrade or just a little better then what I have. Thankyou

I have a steel framed racer for commuting this is for solo rides and the odd race once or twice a year(tri-athalon) I have gp400s tyres if that makes any difference to your help and scrictly use the Avanti for training(long rides)

The R501 is a very similar wheel to what you currently have.

The Ksyrium Elite is a massive step up the range & well beyond your budget.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Yeah, the R501 is not a bad wheel for that price level.

Thankyou jasonc I don't use wiggle but I found on e-bay for 154 and free postage right on my budget I see that they are a sealed bearing hub obviously a big upgrade on what I have but will it be odd(and I don't care about looks) to have such a good wheel on back and the sora cup and cone model on the front or do I really need to think about getting both rear and front. I hope it wont really matter as I can only afford the rear at the moment. thankyou again for your input

Cannot complain about any of the dozen or so purchases I've made from Wiggle, or Chain Reaction, or Cell, etc..

You are obviously very new to cycling, why do you need to "upgrade" your wheels?
Ride more and think about upgrading less.

I upgraded my wheels earlier this year and they arrived two days before a spoke nipple sheared off my old RS10s. It's not hard to change a spoke but I appreciated not having to be off the bike. Not as important if you're not an addict ;-)

They will be lighter than your Alex wheels, but I still wouldn't call them light (around 1760g) compared to some race wheels. A lot of people swear by them as training or commuting wheels.
