Hi,
Can any one recommend or know of a bike shop in Melbourne that stock large >62cm helmets?
Tried quite a few shops, from LBS, chain bike shops, department stores. The only ones that fit half decently is a Rosebank from Big W. There must be some else where??
Also I am finding the sizes of the helmets to be inconsistent? Take the Rosebank as an example, the size M/L that I got fit, but the M/L in the next model up feels like a vise?? Doesn't exactly make too much sense. Or is just that I got a weirdly shaped big head?
I am tempted to go online, but with helmets/clothing I would prefer to get it in person.

What's your budget? Road or mountain bike helmet?
I found the Fox Flux and Kali Amara mtb helmets fit me OK and my noggin is on the large size.

Doesn't matter if road/mountain, its just for commuting.trailgumby wrote:What's your budget? Road or mountain bike helmet?

Regarding the budget, probably less than a hundred, as I would probably leave the helmet with the bike when parked. But getting one that fits properly is more important.
Btw, the Fox Flux does look good.

Flux is over your budget then unless you get it on sale. The Amara is actually made by the same people (I have both and that's what the stickers say) and is in your budget.
I did a review on the Amara that's in the reviews and tech section on this site.

Specialized Echelon would be my suggestion. Roughly in your price range, and the most comfortable helmet I've owned, ever. Says 57-63cm, from memory, and they mean it. I wear a size 64 Akubra and it fits just fine.
FWIW, I think you're absolutely right to try helmets on for size. Head shapes vary significantly; I gather than back in the days where people wore hats, they would come not only in different sizes, but different aspect ratios. I've come across a few helmets that have the right circumference but the wrong aspect ratio - heaps of room on the side, but tight front-to-back or vice versa.

try the specialized s3 road helmet
i came from the cratoni and bell volt and found that these were quite snug
but after wearing the s3, it had good adjustments to accomodate my head
go and try it out for yourself

Don't be too quick to dismiss the BigDub ones. I happily use a K-Mart jobby, day to day. I figure if they satisfy the standards they're functionally good enough. If you want style to go with it, then worry about $.
~60cm skon here - So I'm at the same end of the bell curve as the OP

The Big W one are alright, except that after a 40k round trip the other day. I sweated through it and it smelled the following day, so I figured probably try to find something with a bit better ventilation, so I don't have to wash helmets that often.
