Protein shake then go for a 30-45 minute walk to ease the legs down, munching on a nut bar or muffin or something as I go then massage (self administered [not that kind! :shock: ]), especially if it's been a long day - 6+ hours. Bum around for a bit, then a long hot soak in the bath infused with eucalyptus oil, and a beer. Dinner later.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

120 "hard" k's after a night of drinking, no not me. 40 may be and that's hard too.

I don't think anyone on the forum can claim to do the 80's and and 120's over the weekend and still has a decent weekend.

As for the 10:30 finish, who on earth wakes up at 5am on a Sunday, retired guys may be.

For plenty of experienced cyclists, distances such as Schroeds mentions are not remarkable, they are just their regular weekend rides. Mine are 60km and 100km. I've completed my ride, had breakfast and gone home by around 10am.

Life doesn't stop so you can go for a ride - there are still all the normal weekend chores and commitments to face. That is why we are up at 5am on Sunday (and for me, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday). Actually my body clock now wakes me at 5am every morning and I feel crappy all day if I lie around in bed.

OTOH, most retirees have all day to ride so don't need to get up at 5am. Many do though - to get their cycling fix and socialise with their mates.

heaps of guys I know do 100k at 5am, and are at coffee before 9am. they are younger, several are f/t uni students with p/t jobs, and are generally hard core. where they differ from others their age is they are in bed by 9.30p.

I can manage a ride at 5-6am up to 80k before it starts to impact the rest of my day, energy wise.

Tomorrow, i'll be up before 5am to drive an hour to the Gold Coast, to do this 140k ride.

Should still be home by 1.30pm. Will have a quick ly down, then meet friends for 5 k walk and coffee.

I think you'll find cyclists who do >4 hrs/wk go to bed earlier.

I'm very much average, and I manage those kinds of rides. I would have done 80km today except for the threatening weather - so I finished at 55.5km and really bolted home as fast as I could.

I don't get up at 5:00am though, that's something I don't have to do, most fortunately. But some people do, because they love cycling and that's how they fit those long rides into the weekend schedule of other tasks.

At one stage I was doing more than 200km a week (but more rides), now it's 140-160km a week made up of only 3 rides. I don't have time anymore to do many rides per week.

ain't that the truth.....I've been missing morning rides due to staying up....so have come to the conclusion TdF is bad for my health!
nevertheless, despite trying to stay up last night, was out like a light early...and too stuffed to ride at 6am. got out the door just before 9 to meet mates for coffee. then rain cut my ride to 25k

I will say the other reason for early riding is to be at post ride coffee by bogan'clock, which is about 930am in my woods. this is the time psshead agro wannabe tradies, geriatrics, and assorted low life get moving for the day, and make the roads more dangerous.

I have to agree with you on that point on bogan o'clock! I'm lucky to be able to ride fast and for long distances without needing to go on roads. But you still get a few clowns in the nearby traffic (only in one place) trying to see if they can scare you.

There have been a few nights I've had TDF on and ended up falling asleep before it finished. :roll:

My own recovery routine is some massaging the legs and stretching, along with a nice hot shower. And a huge plate of pasta!

Learned an important lesson today. If riding in 0-3°C for a few hours in the rain, don't jump straight into a hot shower. Ah the pain! The GLW couldn't help laughing when I jumped out looking like a lobster.

Kudos to you all, good wine is something I will enjoy for a long time.
As for 5am starts on weekend, you guys can go have it all.

I love my late nights at the jazz bar, followed by a decent bay ride in the morning.

So my Sunday ride started at 415am, breaky, short drive to mate's place, put everything in one car, start ride an hour away at Currumbin.
Roads were delightfully empty, sun was coming up, crispy temp....at Mudgeereeba in no time, then a beautiful pretty traffic free ride up Springbrook, then down the west side to Numinbah Valley, and some of the nicest riding you could do anywhere in Australia. over the border, and added 22k with return trip to breaky at Flutterbies in Tyalgum, then back to Tomewin.....when near the top my energy was suddenly spent. the trip back down Currumbin Valley was tortuous, just nothing left and aching as if feverish....arrived back totally spent. slept in car on way back. 6 hours in the saddle.

knew I was in danger of cramping, so kept the electrolyte going for several hours....for early dinner had minestrone soup, pita bread, (and corn chips), went to bed earlyish, woke up around 9.30pm hungry as....fried some tofu and spinach, cup of soy milk tea, then drifted off into deep sleep. went to work mid morning after 5km walk, resistance ex and stretching. got through the day pretty good I thought. We usually do our longer rides Sat so we have Sun to recover.

i dunno what we're recovering from, but i wanna recover with you guys. sounds like eating, drinking beer, laying on the couch and sleeping are top priorities, and i can do all of that any day!

ok, i just read your thread.

get home, cook breakfast - some bread crust toast, maybe a banana, probably weetbix. no milk. ARRRGH! drive to shops, buy a carton of milk. walk past bakery. must resist. eat custard tart before getting back in wifes car.
get home, put milk away, go for shower. get yelled at for waking wife because she doesn't appreciate my sunnyboys rendition. walk around house looking for knicks, jersey, arm warmers, cap. why is my glove in the fridge? where's my other glove?
get the milk out, eat some froot loops. put on a load of washing. clean out the cat turds from the litter tray. vomit a bit.
put on some cawfie. drink a cup or two while checking everyones strava segments. log in with my alias and compare. crack the darkys and swear theyre all using peds or something.
eat some more froot loops.
sit on the couch and watch thomas or peppa or whatever they watch these days. hang out the washing.
wife descends and we do family stuff ie: housework, park, shopping, lunch with friends.
get home asap and sit on bna and ebay for the rest of the arvo looking for lighter parts.
go to bed late and be grouchy all sunday.

For me it's a nice big lo fat milk Milo and some fruit if its an early one. Lunch if its after taking the kids to school.

I usually ride to school with kids so the 12km of riding too and fro, at a very steady pace, is good to relax the legs.
