The above “article” from the Fremantle Gazette, February 19, 2013, page 14 suggests that the Western Australian Police at Fremantle now have their own bike patrol unit. Whilst I think it is great the WA Police are adopting bicycles as a tool in their armour I do find it rather amusing, no hypocritical that of all police areas, Fremantle gets a bicycle based patrol unit. After all Fremantle Police don’t have a great track record in enforcing laws to protect vulnerable road users. Who knows having officers on bicycles might, just might make them more aware of what the rest of us have to put up with way to often. Now if they just went out in Lyca ... Andrew

I swear the highlight of the Community Newspapers journalists day must be coming up with crap pun headlines.

Yes. I would like to see them out and about riding in Lycra and riding bikes just like so many of us ride, i.e., the equivalent of unmarked police cars so that they can see and experience what cyclists experience all so often. Maybe just maybe then we might see a positive change in the way the WA Police deal with motorist - cyclist inicidents but more importantly they will see a lot more of what we see and could up the ante in terms of prosecuting offences by cyclists and motorists. That notwithstanding I also see a role for the uniformed patrols. Andrew

I rode around Freo recently with my wife, and you can get from one end to the other in no time. These guys on their bikes should make quite a difference in terms of visibility and deterring potential criminals. They'll be silent and fast, and can slip around the backstreets with little to no warning, plus they can run down suspects trying to escape on foot.
Riding and writing my way to health and happiness.

Are those hand-me-down frames from the Perth police? The last bicycle patrol I saw in Perth had black dual-suspension bikes, but for several years previously they had been riding white frames like those in the photo above. Riding them through red lights, too!

Not just community newspapers...
I ride 25s on the basis that they divide more easily into 100 than 23s.

You forgot the dodgy pub bike with the balding wonky back wheel, rusty chain and 3/9 selectable gears.
2007 Giant TCR A2 Aliance 1940s Bullock - nice and strong for the boss. Cargo bike - soon.
