Just bought an Orca, what next?

Postby zephyrus17 » Mon Sep 02, 2013 7:39 pm

I just purchased a used 2012 Orbea Orca Silver with Di2. And I'm going to pick it up in a couple of days. Before riding away with it like I stole it, what specific checks or steps should I do next?

Errr, generally it's customary to check before you buy. What's your recourse if something is awry?

Buying site unseen!?!? Without some research first?!?!

I think you bought one of these, mate.....

If the seller was genuine, it might be still fresh enough to sell onto the local fish/sea food market. By the Kg of course. You might recoup a bit of dosh.

[edit : If you can't quicky turn it over - just write it off as "Scientific Purposes" if the ATO should tap you on the shoulder]

No, no, the bike is local and everything's fine with it. I'm just wondering if there's anything specific about carbon bikes that I have to be extra careful about as this will be my first carbon bike.

I reckon you should have bought a Narwhal instead. Or at least this Orca

I've just been told off by HH for being facetious (although I still like my Orca over yours).
For the OP lets get serious now. If you're about to roll a new bike out of the shop I'd be checking on details like bringing the bike back in a month for a free servicing (unless the OP wants to do the work himself), lots of things come loose on a new bike. I'd be asking what they did at assembly of the bike, lots of LBS's just pull a bike from a box and throw it together and I've found from friends' bikes that no grease gets applied to bearings, they assume that the manufacturer has done this but the manufacturer has assumed that they will. It doesn't matter if the headset has cartridge bearings and weather seals, if it doesn't have a bit of grease applied at installation then it'll turn into a rotten apple after a few miles.
And OP, get a pump, spare tyre and patch kit just for that bike. So many people on my commute don't but that's so many people I won't help if they get a problem. Since it is a new bike get a multitool in case of the usual new bike patter of something goes out of alignment, stretches or comes loose, you don't need these while you're on that bike ride far from the LBS.

Picked it up yesterday afternoon. Found the seat a bit too high, but otherwise, rides superbly!
