Extending height of Integrated Seat Post?

Postby goudgey » Sun Jan 12, 2014 12:34 pm

I've been searching for a longer than standard ISP mast topper to suit an FM015-ISP frame without any luck so what about this as a solution to gain a few extra mm in seat post height?

I need an extra 15mm height and I've got the off-cut section of the ISP.
Is it a good idea to cut a 15mm section, sit it on top of the ISP and fit the seat mast topper over that?
The seat mast topper will be bearing down on the cut section which in turn will bear on the ISP and the Topper will extend to 35mm from the top of the ISP.
Perhaps it's not ideal but I can't really see why this wouldn't work.

Thoughts/advice/exclamations regarding my bush-engineering prowess?

Thanks,
Mark

Ps, I've posted this in the Chinese wheel & frame topic so apologies if this doubling up isn't in line with forum rules.

what about side to side movement like when your not sitting dead centre on the top of the saddle. Even if you are, the seat tube isn't vertical so your still going to get some side/fore/aft loading. maybe something else for you to think about.

Good point eeksll, I hadn't considered that. I'm hoping that the 35mm of integral seat post should minimise fore/aft/side movement in the most part.

Got a local composite company to bond the 15mm to the post?

Bonding the extra seat tube piece could be done but I don't want to over capitalise on the frame, give I paid $120 for it.

I think $50 for someone to epoxy bond the post rather than have it drift/snap and take my nuts out would be a pretty simple investment decision lol

Le Mong, now that you've pointed out that my nuts are at risk.....you've convinced me! ;)

So, can anyone recommend a good composites/epoxy company in Adelaide?

Depending on the topper you have, you may be able to fit up to 40mm of spacers and still have sufficient clamping area on the fixed post. At minimum you should have 20mm of "spaceability".
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Here's a pic of the offending ISP and topper.
