What, no 2017 Magpie thread yet?

Postby Alex Simmons/RST » Fri Aug 11, 2017 6:40 am

Had three separate swoops yesterday.... Two were relatively tame warnings, the other was somewhat more insistent. Country roads mid north coast NSW.

Magpie at Cawdor Road, near Old Razorback Road (down past Camden in NSW) is getting prepared. He was screeching and carrying on last week - but not doing anything else.

I'll be riding overseas shortly so you guys will have to deal with all of this. We should have nothing.

That one on Cawdor Rd is an old time expert.
Much blood drawn by that particular bird.

I'm tempted to try and offer it food, at least make it more friendly towards me.

The one at the end of Powerhouse Road in Liverpool is having exploratory swoops as is the one on Greystanes Aquaduct.

Strange as I have only experienced the Greystanes one once?? Having said that, it's going to come for me all the time now!

Ha ha, you ride in front of me then. :D

It seems to be an occasional one on the canal rather than one that has set up shop year on year but twice so far in the last week or so I've heard the flap of wings above my head crossing the aquaduct.

The Powerhouse Road one can be nasty but it's pretty much always in the same couple of trees as you leave the closed museum road and head down where the new developments are and if you have your wits about you then you can spot it early, make eye contact and keep it and the bugger keeps its distance. If you don't spot it or forget then- boom!!!- it's got you.

Just waiting for that other A-hole one on the M7 near the chook sheds to rear its ugly mug... always saw others ride past with nothing more than a light flyby but for reasons unbeknown it wants to kill me!

The chook shed M7 magpie disappeared halfway through the season last year so there was the suggestion that it had been removed, this year will see if that was the case.

There are nails on the light poles to discourage the magpies from perching on them waiting to attack.

Yeah the magpie season has really started early this year. I got swooped for the first time this season over a week ago (2/8) and I could hardly believe it. I was like what the heck, it's still the middle of winter isn't it!

Go up Cumberland Road, then ride past the Golf Course and continue on up to Pemulwuy. That avoids it.

I didn't think the swooping season had stopped - got hit twice on 23 July. Smart bird, parks near the bike racks at my coffee stop and gets riders arriving and leaving.

Jinxed myself. Not the one on the canal, but riding up to Windsor way got clipped by one just as you come off the overpass on Old Windsor rd heading up to Norwest.

That one got me last Sunday, he aimed for my ear but hit my helmet strap.
I was driving past there twice today and saw him in action both times, second time was not a swoop, it was a full on horizontal attack run at head level.

It seems to have good aim as it hit my ear, however I had my headband on so no damage inflicted.

I got swooped 2 weeks ago out the back of Caboolture here in Queensland. I also saw the one at the Caboolture show grounds in action this morning on some poor bloke.

He'll take the food then peck your eyes out for dessert.

As per the magpie thread from every other year.
I have a helmet on. The magpies don't concern me in the slightest :|
It is the distracted, deranged, debillitated or disabled drivers that concern me.
A 300g bird king of pales into insignificance when compared to the 1400 kg motorised object driven by a wide range of incompetent or malicious fools.
