Snapped shoe

Postby Wollemi » Mon Aug 21, 2017 3:46 pm

I want to cycle all of The Putty Road tomorrow.

Changing trains at Strathfield today, my new-but-2nd-hand Bontrager mtb shoe (right) snapped right across the base. Quite loudly, too.

Fracture is 6mm forward of the elongated milled holes. Shoe is still firm to walk in, but do feel it flexing under ball of foot. Will break affect cycling joy or lead to knee strain over 175km, say?

I am approaching Newcastle, en-route to Singleton for the night... when in doubt, stick to the plan.

{naughty comment based on the shenanigans in the carbon fork thread....}

I'm guessing it was a carbon stiffened sole?

(In all seriousness it is a reasonable guess. A plastic based sole would just bend but it wouldn't exactly be superior. Just unlikely to be a distinct break.)

Wrong again ;)

(^^Not Woolemi's shoes)

It could be a carbon soled shoe though, true.
Unlikely to be steel

In the town of Singleton. Went to Colesworth in need of food goodies for tomorrow's ride. As I casually started the 1km walk back to my hotel room, the sole of the left shoe snapped. :(

This time the break is across the top of elongated holes.

mtb shoe is a Bontrager 'SSR Mountain'.
There is no carbon visible.

Can you do a test ride?

Do you have a plan B? eg, old shoes

Thank you all for responses. I did 2 test rides after I arrived in town, but prior to 2nd shoe breaking.
I will consider how feet, shoes and cleat attachment to shoes are performing before I get to village of Broke and things then get too remote.
I can turn back...

The next pair you buy, have a lash and buy the brass sole protectors to go under the cleats. You can see how worn the sole is - I guess that's a good enough reason for the crack.
Ha ha ha! Cookies on dowels.

The shoes were bought as-new; they had very minimal wear. The hard nylon soles had no wear .

That is not a picture of the shoes in question.

The specs say "Internal, glass-reinforced nylon plate with rubber outsole" If it is a loud snap, it would suggest that the nylon may have cracked and if you see the rubber on the sole split, then it is right through.

The hope is that the nylon is fine and in tact, you can remove in insole and check. In that case, if you gaffe tape it and keep it quite taut and limit yourself to walking around, then you can get some milage.

Once the cleats start moving around then it is only a matter of time until it fails.... until then, release your inner-Macgyver! Good luck!

If you can get the plate out you might be able to gaffer tape it up, so at least the ends don't end up overlapping. I broke a plate in a pair of 5Ten shoes on tour, and gaffer got me through the last two weeks and warranty got me a new pair of shoes.
