Giant 2019 new models

Postby Bennoz » Mon Jul 30, 2018 10:15 am

Last week was the Giant dealer exhibition in Qld, where the new products were shown to dealers for the 1st time.

Seems there has been an embargo on the new models, and they arent ready to release any info yet.

but ive managed to come across a twitter post that shows the new Defy and Propel models https://twitter.com/bond00_what/status/ ... 7932633088
with a link to a website that goesn into details about both (Note: defy one has already been taken down, heres the propel: http://www.qicycling.cn/13768.html)

just looking at the pics for the defy:
- looks to be the top model with uDi2. similar stealth/blank paintwork
- Defy gets the aero head tube and cable free setup
- same SLR carbon wheels. could be 28mm tires ? hard to tell. seems to be more clearance between wheels and frame for larger rubber
- may come with giants own powermeter called Power Pro
- same thru axle, disc brakes, compact gearing, dfuse D-shape seatpost

Yes I posted the twitter link to the 2019 Defy photos in the Giant 2018 forum yesterday.

I agree it's a Defy Advanced Pro but the SL is the top model unless Giant have dropped that model for the 2019 Defy.

Opps, posted this in the 2018 thread, posting here for correctness

Cyclingtips has the first ride of the top end (for now at least) Defy Advanced 0 c/w Giants own d/s powermeter.

https://cyclingtips.com/2018/07/2019-gi ... ro-review/

Other models colours (or lack of since everything is craptastic black again) shown at the bottom.

The wraps got let off the Defy today. There are still a couple of things I'm not allowed to tell you about yet....
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Hopefully the SL version is coming as the Advanced Pro 0 is underwhelming. Why move to 52-36 chainrings when the TCR has those but the Defy is the Endurance bike. 50-34 and 11-32 on the old Defy was fine. 140mm rotor on the front is undersized.

I assume when the TCR is overhauled in the coming years, it too will have that hideous stem setup on the top spec models?

The Defy also comes with the 34T cassette, which paired with the mid-compact rings gives a superior gear spread to full compact with 32.

After not being too keen on the new Contend 1 Disc colour scheme, I thought maybe to have a look at the Defy Advanced 2

Cannot understand how there is a different of $1000 in price just for what appears to only be Carbon frame as a difference as well as the D-Fuse handlebar

Fathom 29er 1 is up there too, looks like there's a big trend back to black/grey - I'd imagine in response to last years strong colours being too divisive. Seems confirmed that the Fathom 27.5 won't be coming to Australia (I don't even know why I would have had my hopes up at this point).

Fergy - i was in the same boat. Had a 2016 defy (aloy frame), which was the same specs as the contend after they split the model in 2017.
was looking at the defy adv 2 but didnt like the lime green color and its the same bike with just a carbon frame.

So, i was holding off buying until i see the details of the new models. Dealer rang me on Sunday with some specs and i purchased a 2018 Defy Advanced Pro 1 on the spot. nearly $1500 cheaper than the new model for almost the exact same bike

Strange but the Bikeradar review lists 52-36 chainrings as does the Giant US site but the Giant Australia site says 50-34 as does the CyclingTips review.

loving the 2019 tcr advanced sl0 red, think will be my next bike.Nice simple colour scheme, nothing outrageous, and still using rim brakes so can make use of all my current wheels

On the Defy, anyone else feel they've missed a trick by not bringing the Defy Advanced 1 and Defy Advanced Pro 2 into Australia?
Seems a big jump from the $3k Advanced 2 to the $5k Advanced Pro 1.
Was looking at upgrading at the end of the year and will likely be a Cannondale or Spesh, unless the TCRs fit better.

Trance 29er announced (115mm rear, 130mm front).

Edit - 3 Carbon, 2 ally, availability varies by region. The green Pro 29.1 looks great (solid colours across the range bar a splash on the top tube).

Apparently lotsa of 27.5 propaganda has been removed from their website(s) and yt channel(s).

Are all the 105 models coming with the new R7000 groupset?

Officially yes, but remembering that there was a fire in Shimano's Japanese plant some months ago which may affect production of some components, there may be some early-build examples that carry over 5800 until R7000 is available.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Four models in the Aus lineup, two each aluminium and carbon. Not that I'm in the market for one, but like many potential customers I'm a little bit peeved that there are no Shimano drivetrain offerings.

New Giant Revolt adventure bike released !

https://www.giant-bicycles.com/au/bikes ... anced-2019

Looks quite promising, I've been eying off a Norco (pref 1x though), Trek (not 650b compat) and Bombtrack (can't do the black though) and this is right up there. Pity the orange isn't the 1x version.

Need a little more info on the weight limits for the rack (and how it mounts) and what mountings are available for the front, if any, it's not terribly clear.

I have a question about the Giant Conduct brake system on 105 equiped bikes - what brand are the actual flat mount hydraulic calipers?

Are they Giant branded but made by Shimano or someone else ? Or are they actually made by Giant ? Or are they just the regular 105 hydraulic calipers ?
Here's my blog - A bit of fun :)

I'm not totally certain, but I believe the Giant-branded calipers are Tektro/TRP (TRP is a division of Tektro), or at least developed in conjunction with them.

Is there any chance of getting a frame only? I really want an orange one but would be looking at a different build than the standard.

TCR and Propel Advanced SL are available as framesets. If you want a Defy or lower-level TCR/Propel you'll have to buy a whole bike & flog off what you don't want.
