The 187 kilometer first stage of the race, Four days at Dunkerque was marked by a series of breakaways which were made from the strong winds in the area. The front group decided the victory in a bunch sprint where Kenny van Hummel (Skil Shimano) turned out to be the fastest man.
The stage race paradoxically lasts six days and is held in the north west of France.
