Menchov wins Giro Time Trial and Pink Jersey

The individual Time Trial was an exciting competition right down to the last ride of current Pink Jersey holder Danilo Di Luca (LPR Brakes) . Stefano Garzelli (Astana) held the fastest time on the picturesque 60km course for some time before Levi Leipheimer (Astana) shaved 40 seconds off with a total time of 1:34:49. Russian Denis Menchov (Rabobank) came in 20 seconds earlier – despite partial damp roads in the hills and patches of light rain.

Both Menchov and Di Luca were on the course at the same time and camparisons showed that Di Luca’s lead was in danger. The Time Trial stage saw a complete reshuffle of the General Classifications with Menchov in first position followed by Di Luca (34 seconds behind) and Leipheimer in 3rd (40 seconds behind Menchov).

On Twitter, Levi commented "I hope y’all enjoyed that TT cuz it was pure torture. 1hour 34 min on the limit!! It was a great experience and I can be happy w/ 2nd"

Australian Michael Rogers fell back into 6th place overall (2min 59secs behind) though with 186 riders starting, managed a respectable 14th in the Time Trial stage. "Tough Time Trial today. Didn’t have my best day. Put that one behind me and move on. The Giro is far from finished!"

Tomorrow is a 176km stage from Lido di Camaiore to Florence and a Petacchi, Cavendish sprint is anticipated.
