Chaffing... Do you use ....?

Postby RobRollin » Fri May 08, 2009 2:08 pm

Ok, interesting heading I know and I'm sure some of you are thiniing.....thats just wrong.

I'm asking the question for an article I am writing, and looking for honest answers. As cyclists at one time or another most of us would have had chaffing. its irritable, uncomfotable and in not very nice places.

First question.

Have you had chaffing?

Second

Do you use any type of chamois product to reduce chaffing?

Third

Do you apply any products to you....area.....

Thanks for your replies, its a sensitive subject.....literally....

1. yes. including a couple of ingrown hairs in the groin area that really smart.

2. other than the chamois in the nicks, no

3. just a hot shower and soap.

1. yes. 2 main areas; ingrown hair follicles on inside of thighs, and occasional haemorrhoids (strictly speaking not chaffing, but try explaining that to a sufferer. I lovingly refer to them as 'arse bandits'').

2. Assos chamois creme for longer rides, and perhaps in hot weather. The new formula (blue, without the menthol 'tingle') is overpriced !! BAN ME NOW FOR SWEARING !!.

3. Was there a 3? Change out of cycling clothes soon as practical, have a shower soon as practical. Always wash properly and dry BEFORE donning the lycra.

Yes, yes and: I use a Thursday Plantation antiseptic gel applied liberally before riding. Works a treat and I have not had any problems since using it.

Here's a little rhyme for ya:

Keep it clean
use Vaseline
but if that don't work
try Betadine

Yes, No, I use a cream called "3B", which is generally available for about $12 to $15 for a tube.

Yes, mostly on longer rides.
Yes, only on rides longer than 200 km and sometimes not then.
Yes, sometimes apply a soothing ointment after a ride (anything that works for nappy rash), perhaps once a year.

1 - Yes
2 - Yes, Elite Ozone. Mainly on longer rides, particularly in hot weather (due to extra sweat) or wet weather.
3 - Well yeah... see 2!

Answer to question 3: there is a ointment called Hydrozoil, pharmacy medicine but available over the counter, provides a good relieve but contains a small amount of hydrocortisone  forbidden by UCI unless like everybody you have a medical certificate  .

No real problem wth chafing, but I have had a subcutaneous cyst possibly caused by an ingrown hair. Not very comfortable and no lotion or creme will do anything about preventing this.

For routine skin chafing Silic creme fom the chemist is quite good.

I always use cream because it makes riding alot more comfortable. Originally i started out using Bepanthen, then went on to use ASSOS cream, and just recently bought a tub of Qoleum antifriction cream from goldcross.

The best is the Assos cream, because it feels smooth going on and feels good whilst riding. I also think the Assos cream provides antibacterial protection and helps the chamois last longer - although i may stand corrected on this one.

The Qoleum is OK, but it has the consistancy of vaseline and feels oilier than the other 2. Bang for buck, the Qoleum seems to lasts longer than the equivalent tub of Assos cream.

Bepanthen is OK but its really not designed as a chamois cream.

When the tub of Qoleum runs out, im going to go back to the Assos cream. If you want to see the cream in action, get the DVD "hell on Wheels", and it shows how much of the stuff the tour riders slap on their knicks...

Cheers..

Buy your Assos cream online to top an order. Its usually about 1/2 the price that you can buy it for here/

Assos for me. Saves my asson longer rides. Haven't tried anything else yet.

<Off topic>
Yep.I was a bit surprised by how much the team masseuse laid on the chamois, but when you're sitting "in the office" for six hours straight for 19 out of 21 days in a row, I'd do that too. I thought the scenes at the end of that DVD were interesting. Kinda like, "(tired shrug) ah, it's over." I thought it captured the anticlimax that much of the field must go through quite effectively.
</Off topic>

The tub I bought of Assos was quite pricey, but then I did buy at Clarence St Cyclery.

Hi
Used to work at a water park. Not unusual that people would get really painful and sometimes bloody chaffing to inner thighs ( wearing wet boardies all day).
Creams and the like would soon be washed off.
Best stuff was a dressing called 'Fixomull'. Sticks on well to dry skin and can stay on for days.
People used to come in walking like John Wayne after a week in the saddle and leave with a normal gait.
Worth a try. If you do use it when it come to removal smoother the dressing in sun cream or moisture cream or olive oil and it will help it slide off.
All the best
rob

Chaffing Very rarely...expensive knicks usually stops any chance of that.
DZnuts and Stims...one application to the chamois can last weeks...I nearly wash my knicks every single day of the year
Repairs when needed...rarely luckily...Hydrocortisone ...illegal for racing...but works super fast and stuff the UCI.

Never had chafing.

I ride a 'bent on the road (no way to chafe) and use a Brooks on the MTB. Doesn't matter what knicks I wear.

Never bought any ointment, obviously.

Cheers,
Graeme

G'day

Yes have suffered from chaffing and yes I do use a chamois crème. Currently trying out three brands (Assos, PBK and Udderly Smooth Chamois Cream). My initial impression was a vote for the Assos cream as per my posting, but I am know not so convinced that it is any better than the other brands, however, it does appear to require less.

There are two other brands I want to try out. DZ Nuts and the new Australian product Aussie Butt Cream.

3B Neat is good for repair after the ride in my experience.

Regards
Andrew

1) Not from cycling alone. Cycling after swimming or surf lifesaving occasionally.
2) The artificial chamois in the Nicks. The more artificial the better, I find.
3) No. I just lay off cycling whilst stuff hurts, since I'm not into cycling for the pain but for the fun.

I do find that when I ride 15Km+ wearing something requiring underwear that my men's equipment really hurts. Probably the brand of underwear, but I've never bothered buying a big enough range of brands to get to the bottom of it. Easier to simply wear nicks for everything but trips to the local shops.

1. Yes
2. Qoleum 04 antifriction cream for me. Havn't had a problem since i started using it earlier in the year. Won't ride without it now.
3. I only apply it to the skin, was told not to apply it directly to the chamois. Not sure why but the skin works fine anyway.
