Tire Comparison - Schwalbe G-One vs Panaracer GravelKing SK (on road and light gravel)

Hey all

There is three tires I am looking to get (all 700x35 size):

1. Schwalbe G-One Speed
2. Schwalbe G-One Allround
3. Panaracer GravelKing SK

Has anyone tried at least 2 of these? I know the Speed will be the fastest on the road, but how much faster is it over the Allround and GravelKing SK. And what is fastest on the road out of Allround vs GravelKing?

And is G-One Speed fine for fire trails and light gravel/dirt?

I guess I'm after a tire that performs well off-road but doesn't sacrifice much speed on the road.

Struggling to decide between these three.

Cheers!!!!!!!!

Why these three? What's your budget? Why would a Schwalbe be faster than anything other than a Tannus? (1/2 :-) - there's nice things said "out there" about the Schwalbe Ultremo ZX but their pro teams are still running FMBs)

Hi Thoglette

Feel free to recommend other's.

I just did a lot of reading before I posted this, and the consensus from a lot of people is the G-One are great on road and off. The Speed is apparently very fast and good on gravel. The Allround is apparenty fast and very good on gravel.

GravelKing SK not quite as fast the other two but very good also on gravel.

I'm probably leaning towards one of the G-One's, but can't decide between Speed and Allround and was hoping I could find someone who has tried both.

The three questions are:
How fast do you want to spend?;
How much actual gravel (mud and grass) you're going to be on?
and
How long do you expect the tyre to last?

My only clincher-equipped bikes use 630 ETRO wheels so my choices are much more limited but of late I've been buying Panaracer tyres as the price/suppleness ratio is as good as I can get in my sizes. (BTW Panaracer make tyres for a bunch of specialist brands). So I'm not much use to you.

Unless you're actually in mud/wet-grass anything beyond a "file" tread is overkill. I've been running file tread (various tubulars) or vestigial tread (Panaracer Pasela) or no tread (Conti Ultrasport) on gravel/limestone/sand for years without issue.

The moment the ground is wet it's a different story. Wet grass is evil and mud is, well, mud.

There must be a dozen different makers/brands of "gravel" tyres from the big boys (Zipp, Conti, Schwalbe) through the specialists (e.g. Challenge) to the minnows (Masi, Grand Bois, Compass etc).

If money were no object perhaps Challenge Strada Bianca Seta ULTRA S for skinny tyres (30mm) if just for the street cred? Although putting on some Compass super lightweights would come close. :D

Buy the tyres you want: they're pretty cheap compared to the rest of your kit. And you can always change them.

Thanks Thoglette...that's exactly why I posted in here....for well rounded, educated responses like yours. Thank you very much.

Given I'll be on pretty minor gravel/sand/dirt, it sounds like I don't need a tread which is too severe.

Based on that, from my initial list of three, I think the Schwalbe G-One Speeds are the best option....I was leaning towards these anyway.

I don't plan on doing anything in mud or wet grass.

Schwalbe G-One Speeds come in 700x30 or 700x35....is there one you would lean towards over the other?

Also, forgot to mention....I am only interested in tubeless tires.

You really need to work this out for yourself with trial and error in regard to what sort of riding you do and on what. My thoughts and experience over the past ten years is that it is kinda hard to find any bad tyres nowadays so starting out with cheapish tyres like some kenda small block eight is a good start, they suit lots of riders over a range of off road conditions and on tar. Up in price, anything from Donnelly/Clement or Ritchey are hard wearing, are easy to fit and seem to cope with Aust heat. Schwalbe ones seem fine on tar but I have found them a bit iffy in most gravel so shifted mine to my road bike. Would see them as being quite good on WA pea gravel. Panasonic are fine quality / light tyres but very soft and wear very quickly. If "I was you" just find a all round touring/ trekking tyre with a reflective side wall that suits your price range and just get out and ride and build up your experience, you will soon find that the ride makes the ride not the tyres.

Thanks baabaa. You make some good points.

The tires that will come on my bike (pick it up next week) are:

Bontrager AW1 Hard-Case Lite, 700x32c

I have no idea how these go in the road or gravel/dirt.

Maybe I should give these a try first. I am keen to move to tubeless though and thought I may as well do it straight from the start (hence this post).

The fattest ones that fit your bike comfortably. That is, with a little space for sideways squirm. See here to work out what fits.

Lots of doublegee and caltop where you ride?

Ok I think you are talking about burrs or "prickles"???

Are they bad for tubeless??

They are types of thorns. If you suffer from any of these I would be running tubeless.

As already stated if your just riding rough roads, fire roads, sand, or rail trails I would stick with a file tread tire. Tyre knobs are really only nesasary on mud and other soft slippery surfaces.

As for tyre size, I would use the fattest ones that fit your frame. Tyre aerodynamics have little relevance when your riding at speeds averaging less than 25kmhr.

Au contraire, they are a rational justification for using tubeless tyres.

Thanks mate, sounds like the G-One Speed 700x35 will be the go.

And what a bonus- I also got a free horticulture lesson. Thanks gents! :)

Sorry about the hijack, but just wondering where you are getting the Panaracers in ETRO-630 Thoglette?

Most of the online places I use like Ribble, Wiggle, Merlin, Chain Reaction etc don't stock anything in 27 inch (630). :(

Locally I can get some cheap Vee-Rubber ones that I haven't tried, or the Vittoria Zaffario which are not particularly subtle but otherwise not too bad. I'm currently running the Zaffiros but wouldn't mind giving the Panaracers a try.

Thanks, but I'm not seeing a whole lot on ebay-Australia. Plenty of 27.5x but not a lot of 27x.

Ebay-US has a lot more choice in 27x, but postage in most cases is more than the tyres. I find that online bike shops often have better international postage rates than ebay.

Still interested to know if any of the major online bike stores sell them.

I'm got my last two sets from https://www.bike24.de/ as they had stock and reasonable shipping costs.

There's also a bloke in the US flogging re-branded Panaracer in 32-630 and 38-630 sizeways. I did post about it but I can't find that post or the link. The Minister of war and finance is calling so "by for now"

<edit>
Found it. Last update 2015 so your mileage may vary. No official postage to .au - if you get a response, let me know.

Sorry if this is a hijak, I'm so p&^%ed off I'm posting this anywhere I can: do NOT be tempted to get Challenge Strada Bianca. They're ridiculously difficult to get on to rims. You can find many reports of this problem. I had similar difficulty with their Parigi Roubaix tyres, too. I was able to get them on, but they remained difficult to get off throughout their very short life (fragile, fast wearing rubbish). IME, Challenge tyres are over hyped, over priced, and under sized. They may be fine if you don't go far, have a sag wagon, and/or someone fitting & replacing the tyre for you. Or you may get one that fits but if you want some fat, supple, reliable tyres for road or light gravel try Compass Stampede Pass or Bon Jons.

2 of the tyres you are looking at are compared here https://granfondo-cycling.com/the-best-gravel-tire/. I've been using the Panaracer GK tubeless on all sorts of gravel and trails for the last 6 months and it's been faultless, the only place it ever struggled a bit was muddy 4WD tracks out the back of Warburton. If you ride on tarmac a lot the centre tread wears out pretty quick, I was using the bike to ride to work as well as off road and the rear tyre only lasted around 2500km. Probably could have got a few more k's but I swapped it out before a big ride. I'll probably try the WTB Riddler next after reading this review.
