On Tuesday night 11 September 2007, 20 interested people met at the Forest School to hear discussions about forming a rail trail between Birregurra and Forest. The 32km line was closed in 1957 and some 80% of the right of way remains in the Crown's name. After much discussion a motion was passed that a steering committee be formed to consult with the communities of Forrest and Birregurra and landowners in between,to gain support for the establishment of a rail trail.
This proposed trail has excellent possibilities and travels through scenic lowlands of the Otway Ranges. At the small township of Forrest a significant mountain bike trail head was recently established and offers some 100 kilometers of challenging off road cycling trails.
Three committee members of Railtrails Australia attended the meeting. We will keep you informed of developments.
