Course to perform an FTP

Postby ComradeSpear » Thu Aug 27, 2015 10:56 am

I'd like to perform a 20min FTP in Melb’ North or North-West (preferrably).

My first thought was to perform the FTP on the Craigieburn bike path starting from Thomastown and heading towards Craigieburn: slightly uphill and uninterrupted. My average time/km across all the rides I’ve done (flats, undulated, mountains) is about 2’10”per km so I calculated I need a 10-15km stretch for the FTP.

Does anyone know of a suitable FTP course in Melbourne’s North or North-West and even East or North-East?

Good training but I'd say a little lumpy for FTP test. I'd try one of the outdoor velodromes or a nice steady hill. The dandenongs tend to be a bit more even than the greenwedge in general but may be a bit far away I guess

Tx MTB.. I've done that segment before and love it.
I haven't done an FTP before but according to what I've read the course needs to be slightly rising to get consistent power measurements.

I usually do mine at Mount Macedon:https://www.strava.com/segments/mt-macedon-north-612591; just got to make sure you pedal through the bit that flattens off in the middle as it will drag your average power down. :shock:

Humevale road out of Whittlesea. 7.6k from the bridge to the top at an average 4%. you can start from the yea rd turnoff, that would make 10k to the top and it climbs the whole way. Pretty ride too. https://www.strava.com/segments/612602" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

yes humevale is a consistent climb/load and no cars really, nice air, environment, think you'd get some consistent numbers on that. its tame enough gradient wise to tt on it.

If you're in Thomastown, have a word with Simon MacAuley at Spin Fit in South Morang. You may be able to do your FTP measurement inside for consistency. No need to worry about traffic (2 or 4 wheels), wind or raod conditions.

Cheers
