Looks awfully like the sl500 frame that was doing the rounds of Gumtree/eBay for the past month. The pump pegs, rack+guard eyelets in addition to the dynamo tab on the rear seat stay sort of indicate the intended usage (i.e. not a high-end bike) but it might make a cool retro commuter. I think that the stars had lost their significance by the 70s/80s.feelthewheel wrote:Fake or fortune? You decide, but those rear dropouts ain't like any 4-star I've seen

Am guessing it's something like an SL Sports from the very early 80s or a Sportstar from the mid-late 70s.

But how much is a Superbe Pro groupset and an average frame worth?

I love a Centurion, and a Cavaletto was a good mid-range frame, and most I've seen/had were SunTour although I don't think the Cavaletto would have had Superbe and would have thought Cyclone/Cyclone MkII which was/is very good stuff. Personally I would buy that if I could get the seller down to maybe 180-200adsjax wrote:From what I've read a Cavaletto is one of the lower-mid Centurions so I guess this isn't the original groupset,

Yeah, I imagine there's a reason we don't get an overall pic...ldrcycles wrote:"Custom hardtail mountainbike" on gumtree that creates more questions than it answers.

Not even worth the 500 cents, I'm afraid.
There's no way it could be restored to a safe ride.

I was thinking the same thing find_bruce. It's a lovely looking old bike, I'd like to know if anyone here can recognize what it is.find_bruce wrote: Anyone recognise the head badge? Doesn't look like any Apollo badge I have seen. If not, A is for ...
I was also wondering why it was so shiny for an old bike. Is it chrome that is still in good condition, or has it just been sand blasted or something?

I'll have a guess - perhaps it's an Archer? I've got one in my collection somewhere (in storage though so not currently easy to access).uart wrote:I was thinking the same thing find_bruce. Chrome or nickel, and with those old wood rims I dare say it's been kept out of sunlight for 50 odd years or more.uart wrote: I was also wondering why it was so shiny for an old bike. Is it chrome that is still in good condition, or has it just been sand blasted or something?

I hadn't heard of them, but I'm guessing that is Archer from "Sturmey Archer", but without Stumey.feelthewheel wrote: I'll have a guess - perhaps it's an Archer?
Thanks ldr and feelthewheel. Whatever it is, it's a lovely old thing.ldrcycles wrote: Chrome or nickel, and with those old wood rims I dare say it's been kept out of sunlight for 50 odd years or more.

I wonder if there has been a bit of silver paint applied on that frame.
If there weren't the bushfires LG might have had time to look at it.

Can someone tell me why everyone seems so interested?
Looks like junk. Cheap lugs. The wheels are good for firewood and guess what, old wheels do not mean old frame. Wheels can come on and off with those quick release thingys.
Handlebars sawn in half. Seat is toast...

I’ll have a crack..
Looks 30’s to me. French ends, head clip headset, square shouldered head lugs. Lugs look interesting with the holes in the front. Handlebar sawn off to hang it on a wall? Nice front hub.
Photos are grainy but could be something.
But I’ve been wrong before.
