Victoria Police have recovered a bunch of stolen jewellery & in among the usual stuff was this 1938 Australian 2 mile cycling championship
It seems Bill Moritz won in 1937 & 1938
Any fans of Bill missing something from their collection ?

Saw that.
Never heard of a 2 mile championship. I thought they were all 5 or 10.
Bill Moritz was pretty famous. Shouldnt be too hard to find out who had it.

The Adelaide News had Thurgood winning, Super Elliott was promoting Keith Thurgood as the winner of the "2 mile Aust. Championship"
and the backstory is interesting and then Moritz broke his collarbone then next day.
It would be good to see the organisers account of who won, and not have to rely on newspaper accounts.

Got to love cycling in that era. Not only was there the professional amateur divide that Derny Driver loves, it seems all you had to do to run an Australian championship for any event was to apply to the Federal Cycling Council, which latrobe cycling did.
The amateurs did things differently holding a championship meet with 1, 5 & 10 mile scratch events, as well as 1 km sprint & 1 km time trial. Just to confuse things, the 1938 championship was run in 1937.

I was , via an acquaintance, contacted to assist with finding this medals home.
I didn't have a chance to do anything but also noted that 2 miles was odd.
When I finally received a reply Victoria police steered me in the direction of Channel 10 and a report on it. A google search found it and it has some interesting referencing to the medal.
