Vehicle emissions standards are in place around the world, from Germany to America to China, but without pollution standards, Australians are driving cars that would be too dirty to drive in other countries! Worse, this pollution makes us sick, contributing to asthma and other chronic illnesses.
Last year, a Ministerial Forum made a recommendation to introduce standards that everyone from government to greenies are happy with, but the peak organisation in charge of Australia's motoring clubs, the AAA, is campaigning hard to stall the move that would improve air quality, reduce costs to consumers and cut Australia's dangerous climate pollution.
To counteract the AAA's campaign and secure firm political support to put an end to rampant vehicle pollution, we need to come together now to show a massive swell of support for the common sense reforms. If we all take action, we can run polling and hard-hitting ads in regional communities where there's the most opposition and drum up an overwhelming call for standards to be introduced.
Can you sign the petition now, to show Minister Frydenberg that Australians overwhelmingly demand vehicle pollution standards? When we reach 10,000 signatures, we'll take out ads targeting drivers in regional centres listing the benefits of vehicle standards!
Right now, heavy-polluting cars have license to choke our air and our lungs unchecked. Aussies are driving cars that wouldn't be allowed on the road in other countries, and with transport emissions steadily rising, we need to take this straightforward action to protect our air now. It's one of the simplest things we can do right now to keep our climate pollution in check.
With Minister for resources and energy Josh Frydenberg MP leading the forum, and support from politicians of all stripes, implementing emissions standards has support from across the aisle. But with the AAA running a campaign to delay any reform for better-quality vehicles, we need to show ministers that Australians across the country are overwhelmingly in support.
The standards would be phased in, so there won't be any penalties for cars already on the road, but it would mean that new cars would have to meet pollution minimum standards. The new laws would be good for consumers -- the government's own modelling shows that motorists would end up saving $500 a year in fuel costs -- and good for our air. But we need to get the new rules over the line.
Can you add your voice to the call for emissions standards to be introduced, protecting our air and lowering Australia's pollution? If we get enough support, GetUp will run ads targeting motorists in key areas.
With the Ministerial Forum's clear recommendation and alternatives that are cleaner, cheaper and better for our environment, if we come together now we can show overwhelming support across the country, and ensure that dirty vehicles aren't allowed to go unchecked any longer.
