Pedals - Ultegra vs 105

Postby jbnz » Mon Feb 15, 2016 7:29 pm

Hey guys..

I have an ultegra groupset but is it really worth spending extra over the $89 105 5800 pedals for Ultegra ones?

Powertap P1,

Get a power meter on! Be awesome, unless of course you already have one.

Considering it costs as much as my bike I'll stick with the standard pedals..

It's a personal assessment, whether it's 'worth it'.
Probably not in outright benefit, but what price a matching group?
I'd do it, it's only an extra $30

I'd doubt you'll notice a difference. Pick your flavour.

Yep expensive i know, but the best data you can get on a bike (pacing tool), it is instant and is unaffect by other influences. I am saving my pennies for one now. The powertap p1 is really a nice bit of kit!

If you like it and you've got the money, then why not! I have Ultegra on my road and track bikes, but only really because they were cheaper than 105s when on sale at one of the Euro sites a while back. The bearing setup is the same from R540s right through to the Ultegras. Perhaps the quality of some things gets better, but they're essentially the same. If you really want to upgrade, go to Dura Ace that have a different bearing setup

And largely unnecessary for average punters.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

I have both (5700 and 6700 series) and while there are differences, they are not impacting my ride comfort or performance. Unless you have a compelling reason to go for Ultegra, I don't think you would be missing-out if you go for the 105's.

The main difference is in the material of the pedal body. Internally they're pretty well identical.

Definitely for mountain bikes. I would not bother again. For the roadie, it is useful, but only if you have an objective for which you need the data. For JRA, it's an expensive toy.

Its only one step up. Probably stick to 105, unless you really needed the street cred....

Same here and in addition I have 5800 and 6800 versions too. No difference between any of them on the road that I can feel. I wish you could still get current 105 or higher metal pedals though rather than polycarbonate or CF. Primarily for aesthetics on retro frames.

105 5700 pedals in silver are an item I wish I stocked up on for my steelies/silver cranked bikes..

Not uncommon to see Ultegra 6620 or Dura Ace 7810 pedals around though, they'd make suitably good replacements.
