Tiagra cassette and derailleur upgrade

Postby wkapri » Tue Mar 20, 2018 1:09 am

Just wanted to share my experience from past few nights.

Trying to get back into exercising/cycling, I'm really unfit.
Have a bike with Tiagra 4600 series components, but I live in a really hilly area and struggle to get anywhere.

Decided to upgrade my 12-28 cassette, Bought a 11-34 and a Tiagra RD-4700-GS (and a new chain).
After installation, I struggled getting it to index. Finally did some research and realized the 4600/4700 series are incompatible due to different shifter pull ratios. !(AT)#$%

Didn't want to spend any more, a new shifter is quite expensive, so wasn't sure what to do next. (read that a 32 cassette would work with my existing derailleur (RD-4601-SS) but that's already pushing it, let alone a 34)
After some thinking/research/youtube and staring at the schematics of the 2 derailleurs, I took apart my new and old derailleurs, and was able to swap the cages. I put the old derailleur with the cage from the RD-4700-GS back on the bike, and it indexed easily and shifts smoothly! Can't wait to go out for a ride now.

Put your 4600 derailleur back on, and a 32T cassette.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.
