For those of us who started 'seriously' because of Sheldon ...

Postby HappyHumber » Thu Mar 08, 2018 11:07 pm

It was 10 years ago early in 2008 that Sheldon Brown passed on.

His wife, Harriet Fell and mate John Allen have been more recently releasing some fascinating Sheldon trivia in the lead up to this anniversary of his passing.

I think I only became aware of Sheldon after his death. His data, opinions, techniques and cataloguing of all things bike are still an incredible resource a decade on. Praise be Sheldon, and kudos to John Allen/Harris Cyclery/whoever it is that keeps it all online :D

I ended up watching the rest, very good. A WTV (Perth community television) series about local bicycle and cycling identities could be interesting.

Wow I really wouldn't have thought it was 10 years already. I still consult his website every so often when something catches me out.

10 years? Wow.
The fact his name is still so well known, even here in Oz, after such time is testament to what he put together.

Must have a strong following here, his wife mentions Australia.

Seems to be quite a bit of interest in Sheldon's legacy recently. This now an iOS app available in iTunes which makes accessing his pages easier.

His articles got me onto my Raleigh Twenty, and still help keep it going.

I certainly didn’t start because of Sheldon, but his pages were invaluable in building my maintenance and building knowledge. I’m sure there were plenty more like him out there, Zinn for example, but having Sheldon put all that together ‘free’ on the internet certainly increased the knowledge pool.

I am thankful that people like him existed/exist and were/are willing to share their knowledge so well.

I thought I replied here before, but apparently not.....

I didn't become aware of Sheldon until after I had entered the bike industry. Although his disciples have kept the website going, to be honest it hasn't fully kept up with some of the modern developmemts and has a few holes where new stuff is concerned. That said, it is a truly invaluable resource for a lot of the older stuff that we still come across, and will help get many a mechanic, amateur or professional, out of many technical pickles.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

I hear where you're coming from Duck!; but I've always thought Sheldon's angle was more for the hobbyist tinkerer not so much the professional. For me; the more serious twiddling and fiddling was borne out of 1) inconsistency of my LBS at the time as I was beginning riding more 2) austerity - I saw a chance to practice on kerbside cast offs and get my confidence up before I buggered my good bike I was relying on. I found a $5 book on DIY Maintenance in a bargain bin one day ca. 2004; and Sheldon's website shortly thereafter. It was quite an empowering time for me (despite my daytime job having arguably peaked in it's progression)

Whilst old tech doesn't necessarily sell; there's still a portion of the market that likes re-using and understanding what they have or can accquire for next to nothing vs. what they could throw money at new; assuming they have the money.

I've been watching the odd video on YT lately by R J The Bike Guy whilst his style of delivery maybe a little off putting for some - he espouses a lot of re-use and repurposing of old otherwise upgraded or boring parts and follows in Sheldon's legacy quite well, I think.
